End of an Era

Today a great era comes to a close. Today I not only get a new bed, but I also get rid of my old bed. A bed I've used for years and years. Well, let's see: apart from the years when I haven't been able to sleep in a bed at all, I've used just this one bed since high school.

When I was a teen this was the coolest thing in the world. My bed was a hide-a-bed sofa, and I loved it dearly. That annoying "bar" that hits across the back and makes everyone hate hide-a-beds actually gave me support right where I needed it, making it more comfortable for me than a flat bed. Also, when I made my bed in the morning my bedroom got bigger and I had a sofa! How cool is that? Oh, I adored my bed.

It was originally a yellow floral brocade some time in the 70's. Then I got a hold of it some time in the mid-80's. I reupholstered it green in the mid-90's, then blue in the mid-00's. It's been stained, ripped, torn, used as a scratching post, broken, repaired, broken again, roped, taped, riveted.... it's been through more than any sofa I know of. It's paid its dues. And now, heading into the teens, it's due for a more than honourable retirement. Today it goes to the junkyard.

R.I.P., my dear old dead bed!

Today I get the first brand-new, right-from-the-store bed I can ever remember having. Correct me if I'm wrong, Mom?
