When the wind blows in clean from Metropolis, or the night air is heavy with the scent of spring and new growth, Batgirl stands at the top of a skyscraper and looks up at the stars. She’s waiting for something, unsettled, incomplete. The world reset itself and even though it’s all straight in her head, some of the pieces don’t fit where she thinks they should. The Flash is dead, the worlds are now-a world-and she can’t sleep. She’s not the only one, but-

She shouldn’t hate Superman. Doesn’t hate Superman, the word’s not right, she-resents him? Feels a whole host of emotions she doesn’t know what to do with every time she sees that ‘S’, anger and fear and sadness, and tamps it down. He’s the other half of the World’s Finest, Batman’s partner, she can’t keep blaming him for her messed-up reaction to the Crisis. Probably it’s something stupid and little, that changed from one life to the next, willy-nilly, and she just happens not to have it in this one.

That’s all it is, she tries her best to convince herself. Because if it’s something more, if it’s-if it’s someone, the way the hole in her chest says it might be-she can’t take it. Who was here before who isn’t here now? Who does she scan the sky for when she gets bored patrolling? Her balance has been snatched away, and nights like these, when her blood sings and she just wants to find someone to share a silly grin with, they’re the worst. Above a throbbing, noisy, crowded city, she stands alone.

Her heart aches, and she doesn’t know why.
