only to shine. dcu. damian wayne. listen here.

crystal castles: celestica. the killers: sweet talk. florence + the machine: hardest of hearts. regina spektor: pound of flesh (live at bull moose). marina & the diamonds: numb. elbow: some riot. birdy: the district sleeps alone tonight. death cab for cutie: codes and keys. metric: twilight galaxy (acoustic). fiona apple: every single night. brian crain: dream of flying. radical face: welcome home.

I just have a lot of feelings about Damian, okay? He's pretty much the worst child. But he's the best worst child. A lot of the feelings I usually have about the robot who wants to be a real boy, I also have about Damian, because Talia kind of made him the way she wanted. Damian is TEN, okay, but Stephanie Brown literally had to take him to a moon bounce and force him to jump in it to show him how to play like an actual kid, because his childhood consisted mainly of killer ninja training. So he doesn't really get regular life, and he doesn't react properly to other people, and he's basically horrible to everyone, even the people he likes, because he doesn't know how to be any other way. But he's trying so hard. Sometimes that just looks like more of him being horrible, because, again, he was never taught anything else.

[Including doing upsetting things to bugs]Like, in Batman & Robin #4, a firefly lands on Damian's hand, and he says, "It's never completely dark for you, is it? There's always a light on even if it's behind you." And then he kills the firefly, so that he can have its light. It's kind of terrible and upsetting, but it's not Damian killing for sport. It's not really the glowing firefly stain that he wants. Damian is afraid of being lost in the dark. He wants to know he hasn't lost his way, that it's never too late for him to try again.

And I've really got to stop there before this whole page turns into, like, pseudo-meta about Damian. ANYWAY. Other mixes I've made lately:

your turn. cassandra cain + stephanie brown. listen here.

zooey van goey: you told the drunks I knew karate. the flaming lips: yoshimi battles the pink robots, pt. 1.
ellie goulding: human. eisley: invasion. marina & the diamonds: i am not a robot. of monsters & men: king and lionheart. vienna teng: green island serenade. basia bulat: in the night

This was a fandom_stocking present for shinyjenni. She was the one who got me into Batgirl comics when I was having happy-flail Selina Kyle feels after TDKR last summer and didn't know where to start poking around in the DCU. This mix has a LOT of robot/human-related songs for a mix that is not about, like, the robotpocalypse, or a sad robot that wants to be a real girl. But Cass is a bit like Damian in that she basically got raised to be a killing machine, so that's probably part of how all those songs got on there. Or something. Also I just have a lot of those kind of songs in my music library, because sad robots are sort of my thing, if you are not noticing that theme here.

winter songs. seasonal theme. listen here

slow club: christmas tv. stars: calendar girl. portland cello project: hands in pockets (feat. laura gibson). josh ritter: wolves. basia bulat: december. vienna teng: the atheist christmas carol. birdy: white winter hymnal. beirut: mount wroclai (idle days).

I made this for apple_pathways for fandom_stocking. She mentioned liking "indie hipster" music and folk, both of which I listen to waaaaay too often. So I just needed a theme to group around.  All these songs mention winter, the seasons, or winter holidays, so that seemed fitting for fandom_stocking.  It was interesting to try to come up with a winter playlist that wasn't strictly Christmas, and it was actually trickier than I'd anticipated, since I don't have a lot of Christmas or winter-themed music.  But I think it worked out okay in the end.
