It is difficult not to be distracted while reading Said, especially in the spring weather.
Squirrels on a nearby tree seemed to be having a heated discussion, and I tried listening in to capture what they were saying. Their bodies were stiff, tails flicking, and they were on separate branches. A lovers' quarrel? Who knows... they were speaking in a completely different language which I couldn't even begin to describe.
In another tree, two birds appeared to be in courtship. They sat close together on one branch, and flew off of it at the same time. I wondered if they were looking for a private spot.
Then a bug landed on the porch railing in front of me. I had never seen a bug like this before... he looked like a mix between a wasp and a roach. He had the black and yellow coloring of a wasp, but the lazy legs and antennae of a roach. I stared at him, and pondered killing him. He was ugly, he resembled a roach and I didn't want him or any of his ilk in my apartment. He fascinated me, though. Perhaps reading my thoughts, he promptly flew away.
I sipped my margarita. I made a bowl of chicken-flavored Ramen. I let Said brag about how many books he has read until I got sick of it. I am only on page 14. I have an idea of what I will write my paper about, but I will need some Cliff's or Spark Notes to help me in addition to the text. I handed Greg the book and asked him if I was merely stupid, or if Said sounded boring to him. He read a paragraph and determined that Said sounded like a "yawnfest."
Has anybody else read anything by Edward Said? If so, what is your opinion? Any helpful advice?
If anything, I am glad to be reading again. I haven't read anything intellectually stimulating for a while. That is what I especially miss about school... being forced to read. I understand though that there is a vast difference between what is learned from books and what is learned in life experiences. My hope is to obtain wisdom from both.
I should get off of this thing now. Greg, in a manner much like George McFly, asked me to go to a movie with him tonight. I responded that I would love to go, but I would need a lot of time to wash my hair and apply makeup beforehand.
To provide some context for how ridiculous this is, we're seeing TNMT.
