I'm very proud of myself due to the fact that I have been reading a great deal lately. My most recent book is "Atonement" by Ian McEwan. I have to admit, I was very taken by the title of the book. Finding atonement for ones actions a message that has been explored time and time again in literature and other forms of media. For example, the TV show "Angel" is really all about a man trying to atone for sins of his past.
The book is brilliantly written and the story is moving. I love the contrast between the "real war" that consuming the entire country and the inner-personal wars that each character is fighting within his or herself. Atonement at the heart is a story more about growing up and finding things about others, and yourself, that you could not fathom. It's about coming to the realization that life is full of complex emotions that only get harder as we age. At heart to me the story is about a girl who wishes life was as simple when she was a whimsicle child who lived inside her head, but as we age we find out that life isn't as pretty as fairy tales. :)
Good book, but I will warn you that the characters are at times unlikable so if that is a requirement for your enjoyment you may want to pass on this book.
B+--I would give it an A, but I found the second part of the book to be dreadfully dull.
