Pitch and Synopsis - Two in the Same?

Jan 27, 2010 12:45

I am submitting one of my older stories to a writing contest and one of the stipulations is to write a pitch.  It's been a while since I have submitted anything.  Is a pitch the same as writing a basic synopsis?  Either way, I'm dreading it because I am TERRIBLE at writing synopsis'.

When getting down to the nitty-gritty, I'd say a synopsis is like a summary of what happens, without revealing too much. But when you're pitching something, you're talking it up, saying why it would be good for such-and-such, what it would bring to such-and-such, etc.

I thought a pitch was to describe the story as much as possible, with as few words as possible, say Avatar is Pocahontas without the songs or Twilight is Romeo and Juliet between two different beings and nobody dies.

Good luck. I suck at them too so I just avoid them altogether but of course I seem to avoid commas too since I have a phobia.
