Dude. Sam built me an almost top of the line computer for something like $500, plus the cost of the monitor. (Or maybe that's including the cost of the monitor -- I can't remember. The monitor is a flat screen because the refresh rate of regular monitors gives me a headache, so it was way more expensive than it had to be and actually cost as much as all the other parts combined.) It's still fast enough to run most games, years later. I did have to upgrade the memory to run World of Warcraft, but that was only another $40. It's got something like a 50 gig hard drive. It's a really good computer.

Send him to Fry's, or whatever cheapo oversized electronics store you have out there, to price all of the componants he wants. He might discover that it'll cost him a lot less than he thought, especially if he's willing to compromise on one or two unimportant things (like, who really needs a 100 gig hard drive?). Especially if he already has a monitor he can use.

Jim wants a TOP of the line computer, he wants a dual core AMD and a serial ATA harddrive. I know computers, but I'm not up on the latest stuff. His current computer is more the acceptable for most people. He can easily run Warcraft.

If he gets his dream computer he'll spend $400-$500 on the video card.

I think its insane, but its what he wants.
