Gifts - Specifically Birthday and Christmas

I was driving around today, picking up cat food and a cake pan. I got to thinking about gifts (because I was running around for Stephans bithday), and I was thinking of how much gift giving lately seems to be monetary. I've been making a lot of the Xmas gifts I'm gonna give people this year. It's been great because I can spend money on supplies without guilt, since the money counts as what I would normally spend on them for Xmas, and I have plenty to keep me busy knitting, etc. I'm making a lot of scarves, just because that's a pretty utilitarian gift that's easy to crank out, and a little jewelry as well :)

Personally, I don't mind getting money and/or gift cards. Often, I need things that I really can't spend money on that are horribly unexciting like socks and underwear. No one wants to get someone socks or underwear, but it's so much nicer if I don't have to budget for them. So I can get socks and underwear and then like a cute sweater or something, write a thank-you note gushing over the amazing sweater I was able to get that I NEVER would have been able to afford, and not mention the socks and underwear ;)

I think if I was in a financial situation where I could afford to go out and buy the boring stuff, though, it'd be a different
