My Crazy Family

My father's side of the family is crazy. I'm not kidding here. Sometimes I forget that they are nuts but then I come to visit and I get a front row seat to their drama. My Grandmother (she's 84) and my Uncle (her son) are alcoholics. We are not talking light drinkers here. On top of that they are both amazingly narcissistic and could give a shit about the other people in their lives. My sister has made reservations to go to a restaurant tomorrow. My grandmother is threatening not to come because the restaurant does not serve alcohol and my uncle has called the restaurant to harass which ever poor fool answered the phone about how much MSG they had in their food. He claims that he will not talk much tomorrow because he doesn't want them to recognize his voice after all the grief he gave them. But then he informed my brother that he wanted to sit next to me tomorrow because I am such a class act.

I talked to my uncle on the phone yesterday for the first time in about 10 years. He spent the entire time talking about the fact that he is a womanizer and has had sex with hundreds of women. I'm not innocent in this. I thought it would be amusing to egg him on and I was well aware that he had had plenty to drink. What I got for my efforts was him admitting that he wanted to have sex with me. EWWWW!!!!!! Not only is my uncle but he got stuck somewhere in the 80s. According to my sister he wears muscle shits, those baggy sweat pants from the 80's with the elastic waist the poofed out hips and the narrow legs. You know the ones that guys used to wear to the gym. AND he drives a canary yellow sports car. I'm not really telling anyone this to "air" my dirty laundry. I just think this stuff is beyond amusing and it makes me unbelievably glad that I don't have to deal with some of the people in my family on a regular basis.

On the flip side. We went to visit my aunts hobby farm today. The landscape in Northern Kentucky is what I fondly refer to as my geographical heart. I always feel as if God is talking to me and calming my soul when I go into the rolling hills of Kentucky. As a child I spent many hours on horseback riding through these woods alone. It is a great pleasure for me to be able to bring my daughter's here. It brings out stories that I only seem to remember and love to tell when I am there. My aunt's daughter took both of the girls individually through the woods on horse back. They loved it of course. I taught myself how to drive a 4 wheeler and went zipping through the meadow at a whopping 13mph! I was very proud of myself.

I love seeing my aunt. I like the way she thinks and she reminds me that that is what I value the most in a person is their unique perspective on the world and their willingness to share and exchange that with me. I'm glad I am here even if half of them are nuts!
