This happened a few days ago, but I'm only posting it here now....

Apparently, I have another dog. Chris and I walked out the door this morning to find that someone had abandoned a dog in our front yard. Seriously. There was a pile of food around the tree, and she was just sitting there. Except it wasn't dog food, it looks like someone dumped out a pot of some sort of stew. Seriously, there's a pile of about 20 whole potatos still under the tree! And no water. Just a gloppy mix of mushy potatoes, tomatoes, and unidentifiable meat. (Grrr. Now I have to find a way to clean it up!)

She looks like a chihauha/terrier mix. Very sweet and friendly. Loves Hobbes, is terrified of the cats, but not aggressively so. No collar, but she was wearing a plastic mardi gras necklace around her neck with a piece of paper taped around it that just had "Daisy" scrawled on it. Looks like a kids' handwriting.

So. We need to buy another collar, another leash, get her some tags, have her checked out and vaccinated....

No signs of worms in her poop, and she's a good weight so she's been cared for. There's remnants of nail polish on her toes so someone took her to a groomer at some point, and her ears are spotless. I don't know. I wonder if someone misses her, but she was very obviously dumped, not ran away.

I'll be putting out an email bulletin to the neighborhood, but I really think we might just have another dog. And if someone does contact me with "Hey yeah, that's my dog!" They had better have a DAMNED good explanation for how their dog ended up covered in mud with a pile of beef stew in my front yard!!

We have a reputation in our neighborhood for being the animal lovers, and when anyones pet goes missing, we're the first door they knock on, but if any of them wanted to get rid of one, they also know that all they have to do is ASK.

The only scenario I can think of involves a horrible thing that happen to my husband last week: The short version is he was trying to get a dog out of the road (that looked very similar to this one) and someone deliberately aimed at him and ran over the dog, and only missed DH because he jumped out of the way. The owner was present and watched the whole thing, he'd been chasing the dog so it had apparently gotten out of the house.

All I can think of is maybe the owner had a second dog, couldn't bear to keep it, recognized our car (because we live less than two blocks from the accident site) and was too ashamed to knock on our door, so they just baited the yard and left it.

It's really weird. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense. I'm used to dealing with abandoned animals on farms, but this is the first time since I've lived in the city that I've found one in my front yard. She's a sweetie though.

Here's a couple of pics!
