I'm interested in two of your favorites. The first, probably most important, is favorite cold remedy. Since, I've called out of work today with the feeling of doom in my head and a little temperature (and, since heavy recreational drinking likely was a contributory factor in the development of the illness, initially, I don't want to try to cure

For colds I recommend Pho Noodle soup with lots of Srirachi Chili.
More than any cold medicine I've tried (all of them), it helps break up congestion, it's soothing, and it's also pretty cheap. Read the boxes and most cold medicines have the same 3 active ingredients or combinations, and they only suppress symptoms but dont actually do anything to fight the illness. if you're using an expectorant like guaifenesin it thins out mucus, the idea being that coughing it up is productive and helpful. this is possibly true if you're so congested you're having trouble breathing. if you're using a cough supressant like dextromethorphan hydrobromide it stops the cough reflex, which can be good if you're hacking up a lung and might injure yourself coughing, but bad if you drown in your own mucus. But really, they just lessen the symptoms, they don't really fight the cold.

I also use Thera-Flu which tastes awful, or just hot green tea with lemon, honey and irish whiskey. Either one soothes your throat.
The Thera-flu has pseudoephedrine hcl to unstop your nose, dextromethorphan as a cough suppressant, chlorpheniramine as a general antihistamine with almost no sedative qualities but some norepinephrine uptake inhibiting properties.
If you just want to get messed up, like robo-tripping, get a bottle of Delsym. It tastes a lot better and has something like 3 times the Dextramethorphan hydrobromide.

Really, drinking lots of water and getting rest are all you can do. The Pho is good advice, though.
