we had a little shaker here on Tuesday. I was at work and we were about to leave for a team lunch for an employees anniversary when all of a sudden stuff started shaking. We have cubicles and one of my coworkers occasionally jumps in his cubicle and shakes the floor so at first I thought it was him. But when it didn't stop and became worse I realized what was going on. I looked over at my boss and he was getting off his chair and was on his knees and he said, "get under your desk!" it was so surreal haha. It lasted for what felt like forever. Usually by the time you realize what is happening it's over, but this time I actually had time to contemplate what I wanted to do as far as getting under my desk etc. We are on the third floor of a 4 story building and evidently it is on rollers or whatever they use in new earthquake resistant architecture which is great, but I guess the building flexes with the shaking which intensifies the effect. In other words, this was a pretty damn scary experience. When I came out from under my desk I was actually shaking a little. A few people freaked out pretty bad. Mostly they were the people who haven't been in CA long. I couldn't call out or text on my cell phone for over an hour. What was really crazy is that the epicenter was less than 10 miles from my house so when I got home I found pictures crooked and knocked off walls, stuff fell off shelves, perfume bottles fell over, shampoo and all my shower stuff fell into the bottom of the tub etc. They shut down my school for the day. The worst though was that my poor cat freaked so bad she tore off three claws on her back paw. I still don't know how she did it. Poor thing. Her foot was bloody when I got home and she hid under the bed all day wednesday.
Anyway, It was a good reminder of the power of mother nature and made me realize how small we really are. I know I tend to get way to involved in my own headtrips and problems;self importance etc. and something like this just puts things in perspective. I was thinking today that the earthquake thing isn't nearly as scary as the thought of what might happen if we had one bad enough to knock out power for a while, shut roads, limit water or food supply etc. There are a LOT of people here and fighting for resources could get ugly. Hell if everyone tried to leave town at the same time you could never get out. I need to remember to get some water, flashlight etc. "just in case." It was kind of exciting to have something out of the ordinary happen :) my dad said he was in the grocery store when it happened and all the cashiers got under their registers lol. Surprised no one robbed them!
