You do my knowledge of history too little credit, hun. ^-~ Lots of people here have heard of the Batavia. If only because there's a replica you can get married on and such somewhere further up north. I present you proof. I'm fairly sure we've talked about the Batavia before...
Glad to hear you're well, if set upon by chocolate rabbits. *snugs* Enjoy the rest of his visit, yes. ^-^
Didn't doubt your historical knowledge, poppet, just the Batavia's importance in the scheme of things! It was only a shipwreck, after all, albeit a fairly dramatic one. We've ended up with a lot of 'famous' European shipwrecks which no-one except us seems to remember because we keep the stuff ... weirdos >_> >_>
If you've heard of the Zeewyk or Vergulde Draeck I'll be super-impressed! :D And take you on a shipwreck tour when you come visit me in Oz!
Hope you consumed much chocolate as well, me sweet ;)
I've heard of that - doesn't the replica visit Western Australia sometimes? :D I absolutely love those. There's something special about sailing ships ...
I guess it makes sense that the Batavia was famous - it was a pretty shocking story. One of the guys who found it wrote a really good book called 'Island of Angry Ghosts' that was half non-fiction (about the actual rediscovery of the wreck) and half fiction (a dramatised account of what happened). It was one of my favourite books when I was a wee lassie. Wish I could remember his name.
Heh heh. I've tried sailing in one of those little ships, but it was fairly disastrous, yes. I'm rather annoyed that they're not voice-activated yet. (Or maybe they are, and only respond when you ask them politely to bear left, instead of swearing at them.)
Oh, and by the way, there's a later version of that book which is much better - they've got lovely colour pictures of the expedition to bring it up again :)
Glad to hear you're well, if set upon by chocolate rabbits. *snugs* Enjoy the rest of his visit, yes. ^-^

I love sailing myself, but in a dinghy. Big ships are a bit boring to sail,
though those old ones are much more work.
"Let's tack!"
"Nah, next hour..."
