Below is a list of my favorite period piece movies of the past decade (2000-2009):
FAVORITE PERIOD MOVIES OF THE DECADE (2000-2009)
1. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (2006) - In this second film in the "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN" saga, Captain Jack Sparrow tries to release himself from an old debt with Davy Jones; while Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann deal with Lord Cutler Beckett and the East India Company. Directed by Gore Verbinski.
2. “Public Enemies” (2009) - Michael Mann directed this biopic about 1930s gangster John Dillinger and the FBI Agent who pursued him - Melvin Purvis. Johnny Depp and Christian Bale starred.
3. “American Gangster” (2007) - Ridley Scott directed this biopic about Harlem gangster Frank Lucas and the Jersey cop who pursued him - Ritchie Roberts. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe starred.
4. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003) - This 2003 adventure introduced Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Turner; and their battle against Hector Barbossa for a special gold coin. Gore Verbinski directed.
5. “Gosford Park” (2001) - Robert Altman directed this ensemble cast about a weekend house party in 1932 England; and the murder of its host.
6. “Valkyrie” (2008) - Tom Cruise starred as Claus von Stauffenberg, the mastermind of a plot to assassinate Hitler in 1944. Bryan Singer directed.
7. “Inglourious Basterds” (2009) - Quentin Tarantino directed this Oscar-nominated war movie about revenge and several plots to kill Hitler.
8. “The Four Feathers” (2002) - Shekhar Kapur directed this latest adaptation of A.E.W. Mason's novel about a British Army officer who receives four white feathers as signs of cowardice for deciding to leave his regiment before it is sent overseas to the Sudan.
9. “The Illusionist” (2006) - Edward Norton starred in this tale about a turn-of-the-century magician who uses his abilities to secure the love of a woman far above his social standing. Directed by Neil Burger.
10. “The Painted Veil” (2006) - Edward Norton and Naomi Watts starred in this adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's novel about an estranged couple that finds love amidst a cholera outbreak in 1920s China.
