tonight, so excited that we have surely gotten ourselves forever admitted into true geekdom, lisa and i went to fondren corner to pick up the just-out jfp that contains of course, the results of the "best of jackson 2008 awards".
because lisa works at two places (high noon & cups fondren) that were sure to be heavily nominated if not win, we were both really anxiously awaiting the results. me personally because i get to be her date to the award ceremony if high noon won, since scott would automatically be invited as an employee.
as expected, high noon won best vegetarian option (though vegetarian is the ONLY option there) and cups won several awards: best barista, best place to get coffee & best free internet.
eamonn of course won best barista, which is good because lisa may have killed someone if he hadn't. even though i don't personally know him nor have i ever had coffee he made, i was definitely rooting for him!! not only does he seem like a really cool guy, he is the creator of coffee toss, which gives me the giggles.

i'm proud of jackson because best barista, all places and honorable mentions (or "good showings" as they call them) were cups employees. good jackson. i haven't lived a lot of places that had a great chain of local coffeehouses like cups. whenever i visited jackson i always had to go to cups fondren and get a turtle (that's before i discovered blondies...) i grew up drinking cups coffee from the place in northpark mall that is now closed. cups turtles were my introduction to the world of hard-core black coffee drinking and double shot espresso loving that i now live in.
a lot of the awards were as predicted. josh haley got best visual artists, and no offense to josh and not to downplay his talent at all, but who was going to win besides him?? fenians came in second in a couple categories i was surprised about. thankfully other than sal & mookies the broadstreet empire didn't rule. walkers won best chef but i still don't like their menu enough to try it. call me hard-core foodie, but if the menu doesn't make me want to eat there, i'm just no sure i'm gonna shell out for walkers prices.
nagoya won best sushi. hell fucking yeah. thai house won best non chinese asian food, but again, who but them? i mean come on people. thai house is so unbelivably good there's no way they wouldn't. the club fire won a lot of awards but i frankly don't ever see myself going there. happily d&js came in second for dance club, though i think they should've been first.
i'm really excited about the awards ceremony which is sunday evening!!!!! i feel like so far i've been experiencing the best of jackson, and continue to do so. it's exciting to get to be a small part of something that is a big deal in this little town. though i am not now nor will i ever be a fan of mississippi, i'd say with my little corner of jackson (fondren) it's not a bad place to be for a couple years before moving on to a larger city. it definitely has more local flavor and interesting things to do than florence ky which was all chains.
it's no dayton though. *lol* i'm pleased with the winners.
i'm also really fucking excited because garrison is going to be in town tuesday and lisa has said if she doesn't work she will pay for me to go and go with me. YAY GARRISON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plus it should be really cool, it's a sort of singer/songwriter roundtable at millsaps thats her, neilson (not a fan of his solo stuff but she does her best work with him), and some girl i've never heard of. i think it'll rock.
plus i haven't seen garrison since i've been in ms, so it's about damn time.
