I'm re-watching the first season (aka netflix is autoplaying while I'm dozing), and I really think that the reason Scott is (to me) so much more likeable in the second season is because he just didn't translate from script to screen in the first. Scott's definitely not an intellectual like Lydia or even Stiles, but the whole "cute, dumb, and adorable" comedy thing they saddled him with tends to overshadow the fact that he's not stupid either. He's the one who points out how stupid it is to be looking for half a body when a) they don't know what half of the body they're looking for and b) the killer might still be out there. He also makes the connection that Allison's been held back because she moves around so much, and he makes that connection right away (I totally admit that it probably wouldn't have occurred to me for a while, if ever). Which makes it suck even worse when the writing is inconsistent with Scott intuitively understanding common sense situations, like the juice and "my mom buys the groceries" thing (although that was completely hilarious).
Also, I really don't buy the whole fandom cliche of Derek being completely unable to move past his family's death. The way he acts--I really think he had a genuine life in New York, with friends and favorite restaurants and a job or college or something that made him, if not happy, then at least content some days. That's not to say he doesn't blame himself every single moment for his family's deaths, but he's too good at compartmentalizing to still be going through the stages of grief. He's learned to deal with it. He loses a bit of control when Scott accuses him of killing Laura and the bus driver--real mature, Derek, pushing the sixteen year old down the stairs--but even when he's being petty he makes sure that he's not hurting Scott too bad. The whole shady creeper routine and the whole living in life-threatening places (seriously the subway makes me cringe because hello, tetanus) is literally Derek just trying to survive. And the fact that Derek doesn't even seem bothered by the fact that he has to squat in his family's burned shell of a home just about slays me.
Fuck. I need a fandom that doesn't make me ache.
