I think all three brothers are at a point now where they're just jaded. Look at Dean. Almost every episode takes the opportunity to point that out, how world-weary he is, and even with a skewed sense of understanding, Adam can see it. He just doesn't care because he's the same, in a different way. It's poor Sam who's still trying, but even though I think Dean is a prime example of an older brother, Sam might have been a good one, too, given half the opportunity. Of course, I'm very disappointed by how he (and Dean) never even mentioned Adam in canon after dragging him into Hell, but I guess that's what fanfic is for. XD
