Hotch is not sure what to make of the man, the henceforth missing James “Jimmy” Novak, who now sits in their interrogation room, not sure whether he's UnSub or victim.
For one thing, there is blood and another thick, dark fluid all over Jimmy, his curly thatch of obsidian hair stuck to his pale, drawn face. He shivers and flinches and seems too small in the stained white dress shirt and black pants he wears, as if he's meant for greater things, as if he's missing some pertinent part of himself.
And yet, his eyes flash an inhuman sapphire. Hotch has told Jack that the only monsters in the world are men, men he will protect his son from, but Jimmy Novak's eyes wrench a new fear in his chest, almost enough to shatter his usual stoicism. He's already had Garcia pull up the video of Jimmy's recent massacre. The same inhuman, monstrous grace fills the otherwise unassuming man in that footage, as well, and the BAU, even after everything they've seen, almost can't stomach it.
If normal men - normal UnSubs, if you can call any of the above normal - are monsters, Hotch is not sure what to call Jimmy Novak. For all that, it's perhaps worse that he cannot hate him, cannot help but see something in him, some innocence, that reminds him, God forbid, of Jack. The best of both worlds in one innocuous form. And he knows he isn't the only victim of Jimmy's mysterious lure because Morgan, too, cannot seem to dredge up his 'bad cop' mask for the upcoming interrogation.
Perhaps this is why Hotch feels the shameful niggling of gladness when JJ flags him down to inform him that agents from Homeland Security are coming to confiscate Jimmy, who is apparently a marked terrorist now, thanks to his nationwide slaughter.
“Thank you for all over your help, S.S.A. Hotchner,” the giant agent, Grayson, says. He has a smile that should be easy, even boyish, but tense lines bracket his mouth, and the swoop of hair along his forehead only serves to hide his face. There's something familiar about him.
The other agent, Todd, a slightly shorter man, only nods. His eyes are latched onto the viewing window. It shouldn't be possible, as it's only one-sided, but Jimmy Novak's stare back. “We'll take him off your hands now,” Todd suddenly says. He speaks sharply, the words are barked, and it jars Hotch out of wondering whether he's seen these two men at Quantico - it must have been somewhere, he knows.
“Of course,” Hotch says. He wishes Reid was there, but Reid is at the local police station with Emily, picking up case-files, which Homeland Security will soon require of them, anyway. But Reid, at least, would remember.
Hotch lets Agents Todd and Grayson pass him, to collect Jimmy Novak. Jimmy didn't fight when he'd first been arrested, but it still surprises Hotch that he doesn't now. Both agents takes him by an arm each and they guide him out, limping on one leg, his hands cuffed in front of him.
Outside, the agents pause in front of a black Chevy Impala. Todd allows himself a smile as he pops the trunk and retracts a well-revered trenchcoat, which he settles over Jimmy's hunched shoulders tenderly, letting his hands linger. Grayson grins, too.
“Welcome back, Cas.”
It's only when they're halfway out of the city that Hotch remembers a buried FBI case that was recently recovered, then buried again, an infamous case that is whispered about in the halls of their base. By then, it's too late to catch the Winchesters or Jimmy.

A/N: Not too terrible, I hope? *bites nails*

I really like how conflicted Hotch and Morgan are because they don't know what to make of Cas. And you're right, it's a good thing Reid wasn't there when Sam and Dean came!
Thank you so much for this story, it's really lovely! And it doesn't matter how long it takes. Wouldn't want school to kill you permanently ;) (My execution is set for tomorrow and Thursday. Let's hope I survive anyway.)

I am so happy you enjoyed this, bb. And good luck surviving your 'execution'; I'm sure you can. I still have a couple weeks left. *sigh*
