[Supernatural]: Cops and Robbers -- Dean/Castiel -- PG -- 1/1 ladyknightanka November 15 2011, 02:19:42 UTC
A/N: Thank you so much, bb! You're so sweet and I'm sorry I didn't reply earlier; I just like having fills on hand before I do that, and there were so many awesome options (that I want to get to later, after I'm done with everybody) that I just had an extended flail moment, lol. If you get the chance and still want to write for me (which I will forever adore you for), I'd love Dean/Castiel, Dean's the angel, Castiel is a human (because I don't read or write enough of them). Thanks again and sorry for this TL;DR comment!

Henriksen leads Winchester in and slams him forward on the interrogation table, so his grinning teeth are forced to click painfully shut and his handcuffed wrists are trapped at the small of his back. Dean keeps smirking.

“That's enough,” Castiel says, no real reproach in his tone. “I will handle it from here, Detective.”

Henriksen smiles tightly, nods his head at Dean, who blows a kiss, and retreats out of the interrogation room. Castiel knows he and his partner will be grumbling about him, gossiping, although they are all FEDs, because he's strange and awkward. Castiel doesn't care.

“One would think you enjoy this,” he tells Dean, taking the sole seat across from him primly. “Don't you grow sick of getting manhandled into my custody? Of my men pursuing and arresting you as doggedly as they do?”

“You kidding?” Dean laughs. Even beneath the dull, flickering light of a single bulb, his eyes are bright, his face open and handsome. Castiel doesn't understand why Dean is here, why he's a career criminal and not a model or an actor, why he says, “This is the highlight of my week,” like he actually means it.

Then again, the rest of the bureau calls Castiel an alien behind his back. They claim he simply cannot understand normal people, that he was left at Chief Milton's doorstep to solve crimes and catch killers and nothing else. Perhaps they're right. Perhaps the reason Dean is so complicated to him, a puzzle with half its pieces long lost, is because Dean is not a killer.

And this thought jars Castiel back into his current predicament. He levels an even stare at Dean, who juts his chin and leers back. “This isn't a game, Dean. I had Detective Henriksen bring you here for a reason.”

“Oh yeah? And what's that?” Dean asks, with false bravado. His green eyes have darkened to a mossy shade and his face is a tint paler. Castiel can read Dean Winchester better than he can the bible. What would his priest father, his pious brothers, say to that, he mutely wonders?

“Azazel,” Castiel says aloud. “I believe you know him better as Yellow Eyes?” Dean freezes before his second comment is spoken, which implies that he already knows. “This is the man who killed your mother, your father. We know that, Dean, and we believe we know his current whereabouts, as well.”

“But you need my help,” Dean finishes for him. It isn't a question.

“Yours and Sam's,” Castiel replies. Now, regret actually does fill his usually calculating heart, regret that glimmers from the barely contained pain Dean adorns so easily, his beautiful eyes coruscant now for a reason darker than mirth.

It doesn't take long for Dean to swallow all of that - the sadness, the hurt, the fear - down. He's a conman and this is another intricacy of his art. However, it's meaningful that he answers, “I'll do whatever I can,” with no mention of his brother, protecting him even now.

It's at that moment that Castiel decides Dean needs protecting, too, criminal or not, but since Dean is otherwise occupied with his own stupidity, Castiel will have to do it himself.

A/N: I hope it's okay, love! I have such a case of writer's block. >_< Thank you again. ♥

Oh my god, the feelings I have for this.

It starts off like it's this kind of infuriating routine, some kind of rut they've fallen in and they're just waiting for something to break them out, because they're both there for a reason. They're waiting, but they don't know for what, they just know that they're there and that's where they need to be.

Then you read a little further and realize... this is it. The tipping point. These are the seconds leading up to the choice they've both been waiting for, it's the deep breath before the plunge that will change their world, their lives.

This is how it begins for them.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I adore it, and obviously I can't complain about a wait, not with as long as it took me to finish your return story! To be honest, I've spent the past few days trying to figure out what to do with their personalities, and I honestly have no idea if I screwed everything up or not. I tried to keep them faithful to who they are in the show, but I don't know if the role reversal would keep those personalities valid or not.

Also, TL;DR comments are lovely! I always enjoy them. I hope you like your story. <3

It’s probably funny, in some sad kind of way, that the one thing that came close to convincing Castiel to just give up the war and let the demons win was an angel.

Dean was almost nothing like what Castiel was always taught to expect angels to be - he was loud, abrasive, and unapologetic when it came to doing what he thought was right. He was stubborn, too, so getting the angel to change his mind was practically impossible, especially if the issue at hand was Cas’ ability to protect himself.

Despite all Cas’ well-thought out arguments about how he’d been training against the supernatural his entire life, the angel wouldn’t hear it. An inhumanly wide protective streak left Dean believing that he should always be at Castiel’s side during a fight, which actually translating to Dean believing he needed to jump into a situation and kick everything’s ass before it could touch Cas. Thanks to his angelic abilities, that actually wasn’t too hard for the angel, but it didn’t change the fact that Castiel had managed to survive a long time before Dean came around and didn’t need a babysitter every time there was a monster to fight.

Their conversations about it after a hunt usually went something along the lines of Cas insisting that Dean’s constant perching wasn’t necessary, Dean making a joke that usually insulted Castiel’s manhood in some way, followed by Castiel’s calm correction. Then Dean would try to brush it off, Cas would persist, and then after a few angry words, the angel would bid a huffy farewell and disappear until he thought Castiel was asleep.

Considering he was an angel, Dean probably knew that Castiel wasn’t asleep most of the time, but chose to come anyway. Castiel never said anything on those nights and he wondered if that was just something they didn’t talk about.

But here’s the thing - that’s how things go when a hunt ends well, and since they all ended well, Castiel had never seen how Dean would react if he was seriously injured. Of course, the first time Dean was called away by Heaven, Cas took advantage of the situation to go on a hunt alone and things didn’t go well.

When Dean finally showed up, Cas’ arm was torn up, shoulder dislocated and shirt covered in the blood draining from multiple cuts. The monster that had caused such damage to Cas lasted maybe five seconds in the face of Dean’s wrath, then it was Castiel’s turn.

A quick touch and Cas was standing in a room with Dean, the angel staring at Castiel with fury his green eyes, face tight and body filled with tension. Cas barely had enough time to brace himself before the screaming began and he winced only slightly at the threads of Dean’s true voice weaving through the diatribe.

Castiel didn’t even attempt to defend himself, because while he still believed he was capable of doing a job solo, he acknowledged that taking on that particular hunt alone had been foolish. In that situation, Cas felt he deserved the angel’s scolding, and even though it was terrifying, it was also awe-inspiring because it was the closest Dean had ever come to being an angelic warrior in his eyes.

He was just like the lore said, beautiful and terrible and so very powerful, the energy rolling off him as he stalked around the room, still yelling at Castiel. He was strong and fierce, he was a warrior that had fought greater wars than the one Castiel’s pride insisted on waging, and he’d just saved Castiel when he probably had far more important things to do.

“I should just leave you like this, let you feel the pain so you remember that you could have died!” Dean spun around again to face Cas and he’d screamed enough for the rage to abandon his eyes, leaving only the underlying issue behind.

Taking a step forward, Castiel looked into green eyes and saw nothing but fear. The angel was terrified and that shook Cas more than being at a monster’s mercy ever had.

“Dean,” Cas said softly, “I’m fine. You made it in time.”

Dean stared at him unblinking, then, “Fuck”, which Cas wasn’t even sure angels were allowed to say. He reached out quickly and grabbed hold of Castiel just a shade too tight, making skin mended and the blood disappear to leave Cas whole and spotless once again.

They stood there, staring, and Castiel realized this would become yet another thing they never talked about, just like he didn’t saw a word when he pulled away to undress and Dean didn’t leave. He crawled into bed and Dean pulled the small chair away from the desk and placed it beside the bed, sitting on the edge and still staring. Castiel stared right back.

That probably wasn’t the only time Dean was called away to heaven, but it was the last time he went. The fact that the angel was ignoring Heaven to keep him safe was terrifying to Castiel.

Angels weren’t supposed to act like Dean.

But then, Dean wasn’t just any angel, he was Castiel’s.

Oh, this is perfect. Don't worry about characterization at all. This is so, so spot on for a role reversal and I adore your descriptiveness. There's almost a poetic quality to your choice of certain words and I think that's so fitting for something that's in Castiel's point of view.

Thank you so much for writing this for me, bb. The time you took definitely showed and was worth it in this piece. And the final moments... BE STILL MY HEART!

I am so happy you enjoyed my drabble for you, as well. I still want to write the others, especially the RomCom with Sam/Gabriel since that sounds like so much cracky fun, so I'll probably get to those eventually. Thank you again! ♥

And, if you haven't noticed, I also like TL;DR, so you can get TL;DR with me, too. XD
