Sam's heart had been beating madly against his ribs, practically tearing its way out of them, since the small hand had slipped out of his own, but then he saw the flash of his son's bright blond hair, reminiscent of an infant Dean, and wilted with immediate relief.
“Daddy,” Johnny grinned, when his father's giant shadow fell over him, casting a swathe of dismal gray over his sweet vanilla cone. He didn't bother to fight Sam's arms, as they moved to scoop his tiny frame up, merely snuggling deeper into them, ice cold drips landing wetly on the broad shoulders of Sam's beat-up jacket.
The two of them made to turn away, back toward Bobby's house, where they were staying till they could get back on their feet, but Sam stilled upon feeling an insistent finger prodding into his back, its owner folding a second cone into his free hand and singsonging, “Here ya go, Dad, on the house!” as soon as he turned.
“W-wait!” Sam stammered, caught off guard by the small, cheerful man, who was dressed in a white uniform that had haphazard splotches of pastel colors on it. The man turned and he inquired, “Uh, what's this for?” unsure how to react to to such a random act of kindness.
“You looked like you need it,” the man shrugged, his hazel eyes dazzling under the midday sun, and Sam felt warmth pit in his stomach, a vivid contrast to the ice cream's chill or his son's cold nose prodding, puppy-like, into his neck.
