ARIA
When I want to relax, I watch ARIA the Animation or its sequel ARIA the Natural. It's one of my favorite series and the most unusual I've ever seen.
There is no real plot. You can watch episodes from both seasons in random order and you will still understand everything. It's absolutely peaceful, there is no fights at all (I don't count friendly competitions). This series teaches you to treasure every single moment of your life. It's drawn in bright juicy colors and very well animated. Everything radiates joy and happiness.
This is a story about a girl named Akari, who leaves Manhome (Earth) and moves to the planet Aqua (Mars) to become an Undine (a gondolier) in Neo-Venizia. Now she's an apprentice in Aria company, which is one of three most popular touristic agencies. Another thing which makes me love this anime is that Akari, unlike many anime main characters, is absolutely not annoying.
Akari becomes friends with two girls from other companies - Aika from Himeya and Alice from Orange Planet. Three of them train together often and get into different interesting, funny, difficult (etc) situations.
Other important characters are girls' sempais, best of the best undines, Three Water Fairies, Alicia, Akira and Athena. They're all very different. Alicia is a typical "good girl" who can do everything perfectly, always smiles and says "Ara, ara" all the time. Reminds me Belldandy, but is not so naive. Akira is lively, hyper, mischievous and a natural leader. As child she was a real tomboy. Athena always has her head in the clouds and is extremely clumsy. Despite all these differences, they're best friends for many years.
I should also mention Akatsuki (the apprentice Salamander, whose work is connected with maintaining weather on Aqua) and Al (the Gnome, a person working underground to regulate the gravity). Both are childhood friends of Alicia and Akira. Al is a very nice, calm guy who looks younger than he really is. Akatsuki is noisy and annoying despite his bishounen appearance, and hopelessly in love with Alicia.
And last, but not least - CATS. Every Undine company keeps a blue-eyed cat as their mascot, so called "Presidents". While Hime (Himeya's "President") and Maa (Orange Planet's "President") are normal cats, President Aria is something different. He's very clever for an animal and acts more like a human child. He's also hopelessly in love with President Hime.
Now I'd like to tell you about Aqua. We know this planet as Mars, but let's look at its future. Because of terraforming, over ninety percent of the planet surface is covered in water. The city of Neo-Venezia is based upon the Earthian city of Venice. This city, which is filled by tourists all year around, is renowned for those in a certain idolised profession. It is the undines, who guide people around by gondola.
I don't know why I love this anime so much. Probably it's because of the peaceful atmosphere. Or maybe because I love the characters. But anyway, it's a brilliant show, which deserves to be mentioned in my journal. :)
