I heard about it some time ago, and now I've finally watched it. What can I say? It was very... anime.
It started well, with the X-Men assembled for the first time after Jean's death to investigate the disappearance of a young mutant girl. A Japanese girl, but that's fine, it's an anime, so there should be at least something related to Japan in it. However, soon we realize that Hisako aka Armor (an ordinary Japanese schoolgirl aside from her mutant powers) is actually the main heroine of the story. I know she does exist in the comics, but she is less known that Scott, Ororo, Logan or Hank, who serve as a backdrop for her here. Also, they add Emma Frost as her mentor. Then they fight the Unspeakable Evil (TM) which is, of course, hidden inside a weak Japanese boy.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that X-Men was a sci-fi more than anything else. Mutants, while having their special powers still remained human beings. In this anime all the enemies, aside from Mastermind, look like something from your average anime thriller, you know, those insect-like tentacled demons that spit acid. And clearly, only the Power of Love (TM) can save the world. The story turned out quite mediocre, and I have no idea why they wanted to use X-Men when it could be any original group of heroes lead by a school girl.
Well, at least it was very well made, good artwork and animation, good voice acting, at least in the English version. However, with such a team of actors it couldn't be otherwise. Steve Blum, Ali Hillis and Jennifer Hale made me watch it to the final episode.
