Observation two:
Early Riker was pretty darn awesome.
I'm only really familiar with later Trek: TNG - seasons 4 and onwards, really - and in those Riker is a stodgy boring "old guy", almost a martinet. I've always said "I don't really like Riker much at all", but I'm having to revise that. Early Riker, is quirky and charismatic and actually fun. There's a definite sense of mischief about the character sometimes, which is completely missing in later seasons.
What happened? Did Jonathan Frakes suddenly lose whatever joie de vivre he possessed? Did the directors all magically lose their senses of humour? What?
