Things I like right now (Youtube edition)

Music:

Folk Alley Sessions: Anaïs Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer - "Tam Lin (Child 39)". What it says on the tin: a version of Tam Lin.

I was amused by the musical mystery in this violin and cello Sherlock medley.

Les Misérables - I Dreamed a Dream - Jun Sung Ahn Violin Cover. I like violin covers.

Fur Elise in Ragtime showed up in my Youtube recommendations. I read "Fur Elise" and was wondering WHY ON EARTH Youtube thought I'd be interested, because it's got to be one of the most overplayed pieces ever. But "Fur Elise" with a ragtime spin is actually really good.

Postmodern Jukebox's "Call Me Maybe" Vintage Carly Rae Jepsen Cover, because I love the ragtime piano.

And, since I've got a theme going here, I like that pianist's tribute to Robin Williams: Friend Like Me.

I alos like Postmodern Jukebox's cover of "All About That Bass", All About That [Upright] Bass, in which the lead female singer plays a double bass. I like the play on words, and I think this song works really well with Postmodern Jukebox's style.

I found an acoustic guitar cover of "Misty Mountains". I think this might be my favourite cover I've heard of that song.

I'm still determined to stay far away from Game of Thrones but I stumbled across the track Mhysa and now I'm wondering why it didn't occur to me earlier to investigate the soundtrack! I love soundtracks, irrespective of whether or not I'm familiar with what they're the soundtrack of. (I've been listening to some of the soundtrack for The Village, for instance - a film I know nothing about, except that it's a thriller and so probably not my thing?)

And simply for the song, Kings of Convenience's Homesick reminds me a lot of Simon and Garfunkel. The harmonies, the quiet guitar accompaniment, even the words of the song seem like the sort of thing Simon and Garfunkel would have sung about.

Not Music:

I'm still watching the New Zealand high school webseries retelling of Much Ado About Nothing, Nothing Much To Do.

The Beyoncelogues: Single Ladies: "Actress Nina Millin performs Beyonce the only way she knows how: in dramatic monologue form." The tone of this is so different to the song that I was left wondering Wait, are those REALLY the lyrics? (They are.) The song is all upbeat... the monologue is full of pain and disappointment. I thought it was incredibly effective.

Have I mentioned how much I like the intro song for The Magical Adventures of Mumfie before? It's fun! (I haven't seen the TV series since I was about eight, but I remember considering it one of my favourites.)

I was fascinated by this video about how you capture rhyme using sign language.

I Didn't Write This: Dark Sonnet by Neil Gaiman. I love Yulin Kuang's "I Didn't Write This Series", and this is possibly my favourite. I didn't know the poem before, nor had I heard of the filming location, the Salton Sea.
I became completely sidestracked, first by watching Ransom Riggs' documentary The Accidental Sea, and then reading Wikipedia articles, and then "driving" around the Salton Sea using Google street view. I'm familiar with man-made dams, but the existence of an accidental one is just... almost beyond my comprehension. And in the desert! I'm used to large bodies of water in the desert being temporary, seasonal.

Ransom Riggs has a couple of videos of John Green from the 1990s (So I Moderated an Axe Murderer and the Legendary High School Prank). I've watched a fair number of vlogbrothers videos, so I'm familiar with how John Green talks to the camera now. It's weird to see a younger version of him, someone almost but not entirely recognisable. His mannerisms and attitudes are more different than his voice or face. It's almost like an unfamiliar personality is occupying the body of a familiar person. Almost.

If Google was a guy... (Part 3). Being Google would be the worst.

The Valley Girl and the Scotsman is a take of an episode from The Autobiography of Jane Eyre with different accents.

A Female Superhero Pitches a Movie. Now I'm just going through my history on Youtube, seeing if there's anything that I've missed.
