Aren't paid accounts supposed to be exempt from ads? I don't see them on my journal when logged in, but from what I understood (and the way it used to be), they're not supposed to show up for visitors either.
Yeah, I was over-generalising there, wasn't I? As someone who's played in various bands over the years and always enjoyed the business of publicising them, it's true to say that I wouldn't have had much success in attracting people to their gigs without plenty of posters, flyers and internet ads. So yeah, it's necessary to an extent, and of course adverts can be clever and amusing. This was a classic billboard campaign here from a few years ago:
Then there was was this brilliant TV ad for cigars. This is exactly what those photo-booths used to do, by the way! This shows you how long it's been since I watched the telly.
I suppose what I really object to is intrusive corporate advertising. So much of it is pushing products which are essential to modern life in any case, so we hardly need to have them shoved in our faces all the time.
I totally agree about the corporate advertising. Unfortunately, those of us who have to advertise on our websites don't get to choose which ads that are shown. I just try to keep mine as unobtrusive as possible - I also don't bother with any of that "please disable your ad blocker" crap.
That's what bothers me most about internet advertising. People should be able to block ads without being hassled about it… it's no different than me fast forwarding through commercials.
Here's one of my sites. Ads are toward the bottom of the page, separate from the other content.
Yeah, I don't get the point of web-sites demanding that people disable their ad-blockers. Who's actually going to do that if they've gone to the trouble of installing one? Whenever I see that message, I simply close the page and move on.
I would add that before I had an ad-blocker installed, the adverts on newspaper web-pages and suchlike tended to be extremely distracting and irritating when I was trying to read an article. There was definitely a reason why I installed the ad-blocker!
