Went house-hunting in Cardiff on Tuesday and I'm happy to report INCREDIBLE SUCCESS!
We saw three nice places and four... less nice places. The four less-nice were 3 student holes and 1 borderline drugs den. Beth had a delightful embarrassing moment in the really horrible place when she recognized one of the stoner residents as a psychology student who'd participated in one of her experiments.
The agent who took us around that place was lovely though. He saw the horror on our faces and immediately whisked us off to a much, much nicer house. Well, it was either the look of horror or the way that we kept saying 'Now that we are POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS, no longer UNDERGRADS *cough*HINTHINT*cough*' . We had our heart set on the nice little house for a while.
Then we walked across town to find the new love of my life. Seriously. I haven't had much luck with men so far, so I think I'm renouncing being heterosexual and becoming propertysexual. I wanted to marry the beautiful, beautiful flat. Apparently that's not actually possible, so we're just renting it instead.
Ok, my lovely flat, let me tell you of it:
It's in a nice neighborhood for starters. It's in a part of Cardiff that's close to the city centre but feels miles-out in terms of picturesque tree-lined streets, general quietness and family/young professional atmosphere. It's the sort of place you settle down. A huge step up from Cathays, where I lived for my 4 years as an undergrad.
In terms of the flat itself, it's really spacious and full of natural light. It has bay windows at the front and a tiny little yard at the back. Even the smallest bedroom has plenty of room. It has a loft-room with sky-lights and a little walk-in wardrobe. Bethan and I are going to flip to decide who gets this room, who gets the biggest room. Gareth is getting the smaller room (he missed the house hunting and therefore forfeits choice - but it is a lovely room anyway). There's a fireplace in the (HUGE!) living room. Not a working fireplace but it's very pretty. The only thing I'm not fussed on is the kitchen - it's nice but it's very small. For a person who enjoys food perhaps a bit too much, this is not ideal. But everything else is so good that it more than makes up for this flaw.
It's about 30 mins walk from uni but I'm confident there will be busses for rainy cardiff days. Also, I will buy wellies.
You may be able to tell but I am SO EXCITED.
I'm just spending a lot of time now trying to get all the paperwork done and nagging my future-housemates to do the same. It's all making me rather hyper. Luckily our letting agent is very nice and doesn't mind my enthusiasm. She even thanked me for the clarity and speed of my correspondence. I don't know if it makes me a nerd for being so pleased about that, but neither do I care.
Guys, my flat is going to be awesome! And not 'oh wow Die Hard is awesome'-Awesome. I'm talking actual choirs of angels, celestial light, fluffly clouds, a single tear of joy trickling from the eye of an anthropomorphicly personified fawn of happiness AWESOME.
