Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?
Lily/Snape, if posthumously. I admit that hearing about it, I was like, "Oh Christ, this is the most cliched thing ever, just because she was sticking up for Snape didn't mean she was in love with him or vice versa, this is stupid as heck", but then Deathly Hallows came along. And it was surprisingly well-written, because Rowling really managed to capture the feel of a friendship falling apart -- the first scene of them meeting is pretty lovely (tiny Lily is a sweetheart and even tiny Snape...I definitely didn't expect to find him adorable. Or tiny Petunia. It really hammers home for the latter two that they weren't born evil; it was thanks to certain factors they became who they were as adults. For Snape, it was a pretty awful homelife, and for Petunia, it was both jealousy and losing her sister. It doesn't justify either of their actions of course, but it was a good touch for Rowling to go back to their roots, so to speak, so they're not just people-who-were-born-evil. *) and watching them progress through their school years up until "Snape's Worst Memory" is sad, but also very fascinating. And it sheds light on why Snape defected when he learned who the Prophecy was targeting -- it wasn't just unrequited love for Lily, but also the matter of Snape good as siccing Voldemort on probably the only person who was kind to him and treated him like a human being instead of hippogriff droppings. Plus, seeing things through Snape's eyes really shed more light and dimension on a character I thought previously was the-asshole-with-occasional-three-dimensional-moments. And while I think they skipped over some crucial stuff for the film version, they still did a great job. And the scene of Snape just losing his shit over Lily's body is heartbreaking. (And earlier, Lily's last moments before her murder where she reassures baby Harry that she and James love him. Geraldine Somerville doesn't get many scenes as Lily but even in parts where she's silent or has very few lines, she gives a really moving performance. ** Just...Lily. ;.;) Just...well done, Alan Rickman. Seriously. (And R.I.P., man. You were awesome -- I think just about everyone knows that.
* Then again, Snape and Petunia both are surprisingly fleshed out characters, especially since Rowling usually has a very black-and-white portrayal of good and evil.
** Another scene being the graveyard scene in the movie version of Goblet of Fire and the Resurrection Stone scene from Deathly Hallows part two. You can just feel that sort of warmth and how much she loves her son even beyond the grave. She doesn't have many scenes or lines, but when Lily does show up, Geraldine Somerville does amazingly.
