Because I'm completing this, no matter what.

What induces the abandonment of one fandom and the taking up of another?

To be perfectly honest, in terms of fandoms, I tend to be sort of whatever-I-find-interesting. I know in terms of abandonment of fandom...well, I think the earliest abandonment of fandom was the Lord of the Rings fandom, no thanks to sort of feeling restricted in terms of what I could and couldn't write. That and the sort of schism between book and movie fans on fanfiction.net, people overreacting in regards to the slashfic and the OCs. Fandom definitely is supposed to be about fun, and I kind of felt like the people on fanfiction.net sort of fell into the Stop Having Fun Guys territory at times. I also temporarily left the Star Wars fandom after a long series of instances where the fandom just didn't feel fun anymore. I'm getting back into it, though. I had to take a brief break from the Doctor Who fandom after a lot of the companion wars and the Davies vs. Moffat wars on Tumblr, plus some of the Old Who vs. New Who arguments, as well as other things. And I had to leave a community that I loved just for emotional health reasons -- that and I couldn't stay there, and I had to make at least some decision because believe it or not, I was actually warring a bit with myself in terms of "should I leave". But I left because plain and simply, it just wasn't fun anymore. It kind of felt like the fun had been sucked out of it. So I guess in terms of abandoning a fandom (although "abandoning" is kind of a drastic term. I think that "taking some temporary leave" is more appropriate, really. With varying degrees of "temporary").

As for the taking up of another...well, I just latch onto what seems interesting. And some, such as Doctor Who , have definitely left an impact on me -- they shaped my beliefs, they gave me characters I loved, they gave me exciting adventures...it's really why I could never really bring myself to dislike an episode of Doctor Who -- as long as the adventure is fun and the characters still enjoyable, and as long as it gets the desired emotional response, it's plain and simply wonderful. Then there's stuff that's managed to get me through some bad times, not just Doctor Who , but stuff like Big Bang Theory and even horror movies like Halloween thanks to their engaging characters, great scares, etc. So I guess in short, what leads to me taking up a new fandom is just the source material itself being excellent. A chance for a new beginning, in a way, and if not that, a new thing for me to get into.
