A Matter of Trust

There were certain things Naruto expected when he started dating Kakashi.

He'd expected those ever-present cheesy books ero-sennin had written, so he wasn’t surprised when one showed up at the end of their first official date, during times Kakashi thought he could covertly flirt with Naruto in public, or after they started having sex-at the end, in place of a cigarette (or, occasionally, read aloud as a precursor to foreplay).

He'd expected Kakashi's lame innuendo that’d been aimed his way for years, so he wasn’t surprised when the jokes got raunchier even as they got cheesier-though he hadn’t expected to start finding it quite so endearing as he did. He also hadn’t expected to begin replying with innuendo of his own-taking the most satisfaction when he managed to make Kakashi blush in front of his peers (or, even better, superiors). When that small space between Kakashi's mask and his right eye was flushed an unmistakable pink, Naruto found himself wanting to grab Kakashi and kiss him fully for all to see.

That wasn’t exactly easy to do when your boyfriend wore a mask all the time, so Naruto had yet to actually act on the impulse.

None of that managed to catch Naruto off-guard, however. What did was the first time Naruto stayed the whole night at Kakashi’s. He woke in the morning, rolling over in search of the lips he’d become so familiar with, only for his mouth to meet the slight scratchiness of fabric.

Kakashi couldn’t understand why Naruto woke him by snapping his mask succinctly against his nose before ripping it away to reclaim territory Kakashi had seen fit to cover. He didn’t take long to get over it while he was kissed senseless, though it was several repeats of the incident (and replacement masks) later that Kakashi understood.

If he could trust his life and secret to Naruto on missions, he could do so in the bedroom, too.

A Bet Worth Losing

Shikamaru leaned his chin into his palm, sighing to himself for possibly the hundredth time. Naruto’s fingers hovered in place for a moment before retreating, a frown of concentration firmly fixed on his face. His fingers hovered again, twitching slightly, and finally-finally-moved.

Shikamaru tried not to sigh aloud, lifting his hand to make his move.

“Checkmate,” he drawled, bracing himself for the inevitable cry of protest.

“No fair! I demand a rematch!”

This time, Shikamaru couldn’t suppress his sigh.

An hour later, a frown was again marring Naruto’s face, fingers idly clinking glass stones together in their bowl as he contemplated the Go board-on which there were merely ten pieces. His fingers gripped one of the stones decisively-like a beginner, Shikamaru couldn’t help but notice.

As Naruto placed the stone, Shikamaru caught his gaze. “It’s pointless. I’ve read the game to the end and you lose-rather spectacularly, I might add.”

Naruto glared. “You can’t predict my moves that easily!”

Shikamaru leaned back on his hands. “I can.”

“Fine! Let’s play something else!”

When Shikamaru totally defeated him at pool, Naruto demanded they up their bet, double or nothing. Shikamaru was unconvinced he wanted to take the bet, all things considered, but it was less troublesome to just agree when Naruto was making righteous declarations in a bar full of their fellow shinobi.

Back in the privacy of Naruto’s apartment, a deck of cards dealt between them, and several articles of clothing missing from Naruto’s person-Shikamaru having accidentally discovered the art of counting cards, and Naruto having insisted that strip poker was a billion times better than normal poker-Shikamaru decided winning was more troublesome than it was worth. So, he stopped counting, and started losing clothes.

“Ha!” Naruto declared, sitting on the floor in his boxers and pointing up at Shikamaru’s crotch while the brunet removed his own underwear. “You’re topping tonight, you lazy ass!”

‘Twice,’ Shikamaru added mentally.
