Bonnie Appreciation Week, Day 2: Favourite Outfit (also a poll + serious thoughts on teen movies)

Nov 27, 2012 21:47

So, I’ve decided to rebel and not follow the confines of the meme. I’m honestly shocked I lasted this long - all of one day.

I actually just don’t have any particularly strong feelings about a Bonnie outfit today. I like all her clothes, the show does a good job of dressing her in-character; whoever does her weaves should go and jump in a well for a decade at least; I like when she dresses in costume a lot especially in 2.18 because is there anything more delightful than this tiny creature dressed in go-go boots packing more power in her little finger than anyone else in town and using it in a shower of shimmering fire-hazard electricity sparks? No, no there isn’t. But that’s about it for today.

What I do want to talk about is....what if Bonnie was an actual comic book superhero. And here, have a poll.

Poll Bonnie Bennett, Superhero

True fact: I once wrote really hilarious and terrible Bonnie comic treatment in a set of obnoxiously long Tumblr tags once. I think it’s lost forever now but seriously, if there is a single character on the show basically built for a comic book spin off, it’s her. And it would be amazing.

In other news
I spent the afternoon watching 10 Things I Hate About You, and was struck by a wave of nostalgia for my teenage self, and for Heath Ledger, and for “teen movies” that spoke to me on a visceral level. Seriously, isn’t that film so great? It got me thinking about the concept of the teen movie, a formula that’s existed in film for decades and in literary forms for longer, no?

There’s a whole list of teen movies in late 90s/00s era, including cult classic and definitive mess, Cruel Intentions that I deeply love because of my queen Kathryn. Is it accurate to include The Craft in there even if it was earlier than that because that shit defined my life for a year.  And also a bunch of 80s/early 90s ones that I adore including the usual suspects, from Heathers to The Breakfast Club. It made me feel rather sad that I’m either too old or too busy to care about anything that’s coming out now-or else my general impression that they’re all a pile of shit is mostly accurate. But that attitude makes me feel old, as though any minute now, I’ll hobble up on my walking stick and declare through my denchers that, “They don’t make them like they did in my day!” which was all of ten years ago.

It’s a bit sad or perhaps odd. Hollywood’s got this YA fever thing and I doubt it’s going to let go of it any time soon, the money-making trilogy factor is such a big draw. And they have their own entertainment value, I suppose. Oh well, this digression was weird.

I’m now going to end this pitiful example of Bonnie stanning now and ask you to tell me more about your choice in the poll, and also what your favourite teen movie is, if you have one. Or many. Whatever, talk to meeeeeeeee.

bonnie appreciation, character: bonnie bennett, by that i mean let's talk about teen mov, let's talk about real things, i suffer from spite and impulse control
