TVD 3.10 thoughts: "the slow spiral into insanity...."

Okay, so I haven't written episode reaction posts in a long time. But, this show, you guys. I feel like I need to do this for my own sanity (and for an episode obsessed with the idea of sanity/insanity, that's fitting). Also, I re-watched it this morning and it was good, it's always good without ad breaks, isn't it?

Personally, I don't think anything can surpass the one exclusively about the originals (I forget what it was called) for just sheer terrible and also offensiveness this season but I have an irrational hatred of the originals and how they're being used this season to "rain over the parade" as you say and basically hijack this story from characters I'm actually invested in. Sigh.

I think I just have different expectations for Damon, you know? Is it (Damon and Elena) a mess? Yes. But I think the show is pretty openly acknowledging that it is, indeed, a mess. And he went ahead and did it anyway and he honestly wouldn't be Damon if he didn't.

Yeah, like I rambled about above, I'm fascinated by how these characters are attempting to and often failing to navigate this world they're in; and how they're making the ugly, problematic decisions in order to survive in it. That interests me. Was Elena, Alaric (I see Alaric as the third head of the hydra of terrible decisionmaking in this instance, he's not being "led" around by anyone, he's the one who had that conversation with Jeremy and I think he fully supported the idea of erasure) and Damon's decision to mind-wipe Jeremy appalling and just horrible and ill-considered and a thing that shouldn't happen because they know how poorly it always works out? Totally. But I think, again, the show was explicit about having Elena acknowledge that and own to it (even if Damon was cheering her on as, let's be real, he would).

LOL, if Jeremy isn't even more messed up and bitter when he returns, I'll be annoyed. I'm kind of hoping that he wasn't compelled and was just pretending? That would be a fantastic plot twist. I agree though that he's probably not long for this world but would they risk killing another member of Elena's family? It'd be ridiculous at this point, sigh.

I'm not sure how I feel about Stefan. I'm scared the show isn't going to do what I need it to do but this episode made me think that there's a possibility my fears are unfounded - so I live in hope!

Hopefully, hopefully Bonnie's arc this season continues to take shape because I am so excited with what's coming up for her!!!!!
