Can someone please explain to me why you can't send a four year old to a free public school with a pre kindergarten program in Texas without having to qualify based on income!? I always thought that once your child was old enough to go to public school (including pre-k) that you just had to register your child. I didn't realize you had to "qualfiy" to be able to put your pre kindergartener in public school. You either have to be in the military, have a child with special needs or be dirt poor. And although I don't have money to continue paying daycare for two children right now, I also make more money than what is considered dirt poor. It makes no sense to me. Alanah goes with her cousin to a daycare with a preschool program. But it's not exactly the same as going to a public pre-k where she can just transition straight into kindergarten. If my sister chooses to put Isaiah in pre-k she will qualify because she doesn't work. The only way he won't qualify for pre-k is if they use my parents as his primary residence since he is there more than 50% of the time anyway. It really just baffles me that they don't make pre-k in public schools avaialble to everyone, even if it isn't a mandatory grade. I've been looking up magnet schools in our area, but none of them have pre-k programs. And charter, montessori and private school totally goes against the point of NOT paying for school right now. Ugh... Maybe I'm just an ignorant parent who doesn't know the system but this just annoys me to no end.
