I'm heading out to World Renaissance Faire in Irvine Lakes soon, but I thought I'd post about my surreal day on Thursday.
Thursday started out with the funeral of the father of my first friend, Carol. Our families ran businesses next door to each other. I have a photo of 2 year old Carol being held up at the screen door in back, looking in at little me in my play pen. Since her family had 6 kids and I was an only child, I spent a lot of time with her family growing up. Carol and I stayed close for most of our adult years, only drifting apart in the last ten.
It was a well attended, lovely memorial service. Her parents had me the Lord at a Billy Graham crusade about the time I lost track of Carol, which was a comfort to me. Her dad was a solid, good, human being and he is missed. The family remembered me and my mom. Our attendance was a blessing for Carol's mom. It was good to talk to most of my childhood friends. The best part, though, was the ease in which Carol and I reconnected. It was like we hadn't talked in 2 years, not 10. I will make it a point to stay in contact with her now.
Then I went to work. This was day two of filming. Filming? Yes. Wednesday I arrived at work to discover a full film crew parked in our Western lot. As I was walking in, they were finishing a shoot right in front of my shop! When I look carefully I can still see gold sprinkles on the ground. They were busy filming short spots all over the park.
Thursday they were at it again. And what was being filmed? A music video for a Japanese pop star. Think Brittany Spears. I'll be watching for it and will hopefully post a link to the finished product at some point. She filmed all over Ghost Town for short segments. Interesting stuff. The ironic part to me is that I talked to some of the techs backstage. Turns out they were all union members. So Knotts, which is so very non-union, had union people working the shoot. It made me happy.
Knotts Halloween Haunt build is largely underway. It's fun watching the mazes go up. Everything but new hire has been held. A lot of street monsters were not asked back this year. The first purge in a long time. Plus quite a few monsters got moved around as well. It should make this an interesting Haunt. In my part of the world we're getting ready for Haunt as well. Inventory comes first though. Our college students go back to work soon. I'll miss them.
Ok, time for me to finish packing and to get on the road.
