Okay, so there was some discussion happening on twitter, and it's become obvious pretty fast Twitter is not a medium to cope with these thoughts. So, I pose to you a question
( Read more... )
I said so on Twitter also, but yes I think there are absolutely differences in fandom sex (and tropes)! To a certain extent, it's about what I'm interested in reading for a specific character, so that obviously colours the understanding I have of the fandom, but there are definitely "sex characterizations," things that are specific to a certain canon, or trends that take a life of their own because a couple of influential members are into a specific kink/trope (Skippy, anyone? lol)
The examples I gave were that even in bandom, Panic seems to have more kink than MCR. I used to read in SPN and I remember lots of outside circumstances pushing the characters to have sex (amnesia, possession, sex pollen, what have you) which obviously comes from having to find justifications for the brothers to get it on. And a fair bit of Mpreg and WELL-WRITTEN Mpreg at that.
In The Social Network, I used to look for flully fix-it fics so that's mainly what I remember: long fix-it fics or long AUs with arranged marriage and kids and sweet, happymaking sex.
Inception had some really angsty sex - and really cracky stuff as well.
Things bandom doesn't really have... I think it was roxy_palace who was complaining about the lack of 69? And it's true that you don't read it a lot. Bandom seems to have a fair bit of werewolf fic, but not so much knotting. Not a lot of watersports as far as I know (then again I don't actively look for it) whereas in SPN I can remember reading a bunch.
As for stuff I could read over and over (and over) I'm really happy with the enthusiasm for domestic fic, friends becoming more, pining fics in Bandom. Yes to that. I'm also EXTREMELY HAPPY about the OT3 and OT4 tendancies and including the wives/gfs, and I hope there's more of that coming, even though I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.
I agree Panic have more kink than MCR. I'm not sure why - do you think they as a band come across as inherently kinkier (LOL Bden) or is it just that the more popular Panic writers like to write kink and it took off?
There's definitely a pattern to people's descriptions of SPN fandom - sex pollen, possession etc. I find it interesting that Wincest seems to have a lot of fic where they need to justify the incest, where a lot of Waycest doesn't even necessarily acknowledge the wrongness of the incest thing.

I said this elsewhere, but I was introduced to Bandom via Panic, aka those tiny hot boys in eyeliner that are very theatrical and are all over each in other in interviews. They sort of just lend themselves very easily to GSF in a way that I don't see with any of the other bands, and apparently foursomes just leads to kink in my brain.
(my favourite bandom fic, to this day, is a D/s post-divorce Brendon/Ryan. FIC OF MY HEART, I wish there was a sequel).
I'm only lurking because this is the first (and to the day, the only) fandom I've been on so I have nothing to add. So Foxie, I'm sorry for de-lurking just to ask Miz for the link of the fic of her heart, but I really want to read it if I haven't! Especially now that I'm not really reading anything but Panic, and I'm getting tired of Brendon/Spencer, so a change of pairing would be amazing!
So, could you link me to it, Miz? *bats eyelashes*
All We Fear is All that Can Save Us by hidingoutside Warnings: BDSM sex, one scene of vaguely-dubious consent, impact play, collaring, snowballing, rimming, orgasm denial, (imagined) cross-dressing, dom!Brendon Summary: Jon and Ryan still talk to Spencer, and Jon still talks to Brendon, but since that decision was made last May, Ryan and Brendon haven't really talked. And Brendon knows that he shouldn't be surprised that Ryan's here; after all, he's here and he's never been as, well, expressive about sex as Ryan has been.
Yeah, nothing like actually taping your pain kink and putting it on youtube to help writers along, eh?!
It's definitely a generalised statement, but I think the Ways are already characterised as being weird and outside the norm, so as well as playing with gender, the incest thing can be handwaved a bit more as well? The SPN brothers, what little knowledge I have of them, seem a lot more standardly masculine. Not that I'm equating gender binary differences and incest (!!) but I do think those are both things people might have to travel a bit in their mind to get to. (Ugh, worst explanation ever, sorry!)
I completely see what you're saying about the Ways already beeing seen as outside the norm, so if they do something else outside the norm, it doesn't really not much, if any, justification. Whereas other fandoms I've read in with incest have portrayed a more "standard" sibling relationship and then felt the need to explain how things went from that to incest.
(I hope that makes sense. I feel like I may have not been clear/overused commas)
And then there's HP. Oh man, is that a beautiful fandom for incest. The Weasleys, the Malfoys, the Potters, the Blacks. Hell, I've read a few Patil femmeslash fics, and I wrote a Seamus Finnegan/his cousin Fergus once. Not to mention the epilogue provides third generations, so you can have a Lucius/Draco/Scorpius three gen threesome. And in almost every case it's tooootally shrugged off. Like at least half the Waycest fics have angst, or a throw away line of we're brothers. weird, but oh well. From my experience you can just stamp the WIZARDS DON'T CARE stamp on it, and then you can have all the incest!
Not to mention twincest. It's possible it was just my side of the playground (because HP is an amazingly big fandom playground) but my flist pretty much assumed Fred and George were together. They're even more co-dependant than they Ways.
...and now I want Mikey/Gerard/Fred/George fic. Great.

All of these tropes are VERY common in Bandom!
