My book club just finished reading The Happiness Project (I totally recommend getting this book from the library btw. Not everyone in my book club enjoyed it but I think everyone can get something from this novel) and we've been sharing ideas about what makes us happy.Or rules that we personally live by. Anyhow, one girl's particularly struck me: Don't be over loyal.
Don't Be Over Loyal.
She meant it as a all encompassing term. If you don't enjoy a book -don't finish it. If a friendship that you have worked on no longer benefits you -rethink it. If something you previously enjoyed doing something that no longer brings you joy -don't do it.
It's an interesting idea because I think people have always been taught that being loyal is a good thing. I feel like I am loyal to a lot of things: people, books, tv shows, fandoms to an extent, Lego. I want to still like everything that brought me joy a few years ago. I want to be loyal to the idea of being loyal.
Do you know how hard it is for me to not-finish a book that I have started but am not particularly enjoying? I think there are only three books total that I have never finished...and I fully plan on finishing The Two Towers someday....just not anytime soon.
Don't Be Over Loyal.
