Had a very disturbing dream last night that the school system called, but wanted to talk to hubby. I didn't know even who it was, so when he started doing the "Uh-huh--uh-huh--right," thing, I got nervous that it was a family call. When he hung up, he turned to me and told me the school district was firing me.
Thank you, subconscious. You always make everything better. In a so-not-better sorta way.
Working a social studies class at the kidlet's school today. She's always happy to get a ride home, though since marching band is still on, she still has to walk to school with her instrument. (She complained once. We reminded her that she was planning on going through military boot camp and needed to toughen up. No complaints since!)
She's been trying to drop her GT Humanities to get into regular Pre-AP Humanities, because she's struggling in English. No idea if this will succeed. If it doesn't, I told her she had to put everything she's got into that class, and that I would even do her homework with her if she needed it. (They're focusing on Greek literature and philosophy right now. I can't believe she's having trouble with it. My daughter. Having trouble with Greek lit and philosophy. I... don't know what to say to that.)
I've been considering starting a philosophy-geek blog which would likely be read by absolutely no one. But it might be fun anyway. Especially since I'm experiencing a strong desire to reread the early Greek philosophy book, and perhaps try taking a crack at any Plato translations I can find online--since I'm mostly through the Stanford Encyclopedia printout on his concept of justice and his politics in the Republic. I love his obsession with threes, and how his descriptions of the tripartite soul, his comparisons of the three cities, and his description of the triple-caste "ideal city" all echo and tie into one another. (Although I still hate Plato's philosophy just on general principle...)
Prepared a printout on Plotinus, who I've seen grouped with Gnostics but may have actually disliked them. I have this image of an Empedocles --> Plotinus --> Spinoza line of ideas which I'm trying to figure out (because I'm weird that way). It's probably completely wrong, but it's fun to play with anyway.
