"My atheism, like that of Spinoza, is true piety towards the universe and denies only gods fashioned by men in their own image, to be servants of their human interests."
--George Santayana

Ministers to Defy I.R.S. by Endorsing Candidates This would be really interesting, if it weren't actually a shallow attempt to overturn a law that stands in the way of growing a theocracy.
Actually, now I'm really interested in what, if anything, our ministers will say this Sunday about all this.

The Cross-Cultural Classroom Okay, I want to have gone to school there!

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert: Mock the Vote I don't get the chance very often to see either of their shows, but I adore both of 'em. It kinda says something that the best news and editorial sources these days are from a couple of satirists. (Says something, but I'm not sure what...)

I had this wonderful dream this morning about being forced to go to a family reunion. Now, I love my family, but they are pretty much classic rednecks. And I'd decided to take Spinoza's Ethics with me so I could just sit in a corner and be invisible, because have I mentioned that my family could stand in for the characters in O Brother Where Art Thou, and nobody would notice? Yeah. And then someone started asking me about the weird book I was reading, and next thing I knew I was holding a philosophy class for my family, and it was fun and hilarious and so very much not real, but who the hell cares. My subconscious gets an A+ for this one.
Worst part of recovering from a bad cold: THE SWEET TOOTH. I have three chocolate chip cookies left, a jar full of dark chocolates, a cupboard semi-stuffed with hot cocoa mix, and a stash of gum. It's not going to help.
Happy Friday to all!
