CHARACTER NAME: "Calamity" Jane Maxwell
FANDOM: Wild ARMs: Alter Code F (video game)
CHRONOLOGY: After the attack on her hometown, Court Seim.
CLASS: Anti-Hero. She'll totally be in it for the money, honey. She'll keep the dog tags as long as it takes her to get enough money to have a place to call her own. But in the meanwhile, what's wrong with taking advantage of such awesome hospitality~? ?
SUPERHERO NAME: "Calamity Jane". I wish I could say she was smart/humble enough not to include her real name in her superhero name, but alas, I cannot.
ALTER EGO: Jane Maxwell, just your average 14-year-old girl (and treasure hunter).
BACKGROUND:
*** I'm going to put this up front: There's a lot of world history that Jane is not aware of at all, mostly involving Rudy and the crazy events of 1000 years ago. I won't be going into too much detail on that here, since it isn't relevant to Jane and she wouldn't know any of it anyway. If I need to do so in order to show my understanding of canon, please let me know and I will gladly change it. ***
Filgaia was once beautiful, a luscious, green planet where many living things thrived. Guardian forces protected this planet -- manifestations of fire, water, earth, wind... even love, courage and hope. Two races lived here in peace: the Humans and the Elws. The humans essentially fit the bill of humans as we know them. The Elws were a race closer to nature, so close that they even found ways to infuse modern technology with their magic. All of that was lost nearly a thousand years ago, when a race of metallic beings called Demons invaded with the intention of claiming Filgaia as their new home. The Humans and the Elw eventually came to a central solution: destroy their Queen, called Mother, and seal her away. They succeeded, shattering her heart into three pieces and scattering them to the far corners of the planet.
Doing so came at a huge price: Filgaia was essentially destroyed. What once was a beautiful planet has now become a desert wasteland. The Elws have long since abandoned Filgaia. The people struggle to get by on what they have, and some even become treasure hunters or drifters if only because "home" is such a scarce and strange term when you have nothing to really call your own. This is the Filgaia that Jane has known all her life.
Jane is the youngest of two daughters of Nicholi and Mabel Maxwell. Nicholi is an ARMs meister, the one who taught her how to shoot a gun, particularly the ARM she uses. He is a caring, generous man, always striving to help those in need. It eventually cost him.
The Maxwells were once a very wealthy family from a prosperous town. A wanderer approached them, having discovered an ARM from a nearby ruin. They put the ARM on display -- it was in perfect condition, but nothing could activate it whatsoever... until it did so completely unexpectedly. It caused plenty of damage on its own before self-destructing, which resulted in several casualties and tons of injuries. When Nicholi arrived to deal with it, he found several of the broken pieces and felt it was best to destroy them properly. Mabel came across the wanderer who found it. He was badly wounded, so she took him into the Maxwell estate to nurse him back to health. Unfortunately, this meant Nicholi took all of the blame for the damage the ARM caused since he was an ARMs meister himself.
The family faced exile. Even so, the Maxwells shouldered the blame instead of turning the wanderer in. They paid for all repairs to the town before voluntarily taking their leave. The wanderer swore he would never forget their kindness. They reached Court Seim together, and the Maxwells established an orphanage for the children who lost their parents in the explosion. After they moved into their new home with their new duties, Mabel collapsed. She had been pregnant with Jane, and the journey took its toll on her body. She died in childbirth. The wanderer swore an oath to protect the newborn child -- Jane -- for as long as he lived. He became their butler, as well as Jane's own guardian angel. His name was Magdalen.
That was all fifteen years ago. Jane grew up with no knowledge of any of this, but that didn't stop her from falling into the role of a proper Maxwell. She pulled her own weight around the orphanage and the house until she decided that clearly she could do more. She gave up being a proper lady (though she still refers to herself as a proper lady anyway) to become a treasure hunter, as that's where the real riches were to be found. That way, she could support the orphanage and her family that much easier. Keeping her father in the dark (or so she thought), she set off to take care of things her way, Magdalen in tow as always. She's been treasure hunting ever since.
Her first encounter with Rudy was in a place called the Caging Tower. On a job to defeat the evil, vicious Night Gaunt that dwelled in the top of the tower, she found Rudy and his companions instead, caught in a trap beneath a magic shield of sorts. She helped them out... but not without taking 5000 gella (currency) from them first. ♥ Girl's gotta make a living, right? Afterwards, she took off immediately with a passive, inconsequential, polite remark that they should meet again in the future. She didn't think it would actually happen.
Later, rumors began spreading like wildfire of the location of a famous, legendary weapon called the Guardian Blade. Her next stop was obvious: the resting place of this amazing treasure, the Volcannon Trap. Unfortunately, there was a catch. The ruins contained two paths that you had to travel down at once. Magdalen could not possibly leave Jane alone, so they couldn't split up. She needed help. She needed... that blue-haired boy from the ruins. She had to find Rudy, and find him she did. It took convincing, but they traveled together after all. After an epic battle at the end, they all made their way back to the entrance. Suddenly, there's an earthquake, and Jane trips. Cursing, she turns to grab one of her precious treasures that she's dropped, and a column comes crashing toward her. Rudy swoops in to push her out of the way, but it takes his companion Jack's quick speed to scoop them both out of trouble. Jane immediately chastises Rudy for such a stupid move. How dare he risk his life for someone if there's a chance of him dying! She never asked him to do that!! Magdalen calmed her down, and though she didn't apologize for her behavior, she did concede. A bit. She left Rudy and his companions with this: "Although money can't buy happiness, there is plenty that it can buy. Don't forget that. ... If you only wish for things you cannot see, you will never face the problems right in front of you." She finally thanks him for saving her life, and then takes her leave.
Treasure hunting continues per usual. One day, arriving home in Court Seim... Rudy was in her house, speaking with her father. She was shocked, but left the matter alone. In fact, she pretended not to know him! Later, after dinner, she asked Rudy to talk to her in private. There, she told him what she knew of her past, and tried to explain why she acted the way she did. She of course ended up tumbling over her own words at first, but eventually she managed to ask his true reason for saving Filgaia. She didn't want to hear that he was doing it only out of kindness, but since that was his answer... she accepted it. She told him that he'd better be doing so because he loved Filgaia, and that she would never understand his reasons... but she'd be behind him.
Suddenly, they fell under attack. A Demon named Alhazad was there to steal the very item Rudy had fetched for his quest. He gave them three hours to surrender or he would trample all of Court Seim and slaughter every last man, woman or child that he saw. He then vanished. Rudy and Jane ran to wake everyone up, and it was decided that Nicholi, Magdalen and Jane would escort all of the residents of Court Seim to the Barrier Shelter outside of town for safety. They left the Demon for Rudy and his companions to deal with and a promise to meet up later.
Except, Jane never made it to the Barrier Shelter before she was mysteriously Ported into The City...
PERSONALITY:
Jane Maxwell may as well be the textbook definition of facade. She apepars to be an intense, selfish, loud, greedy treasure hunting female who is nothing more than a gold-digger when it comes to interacting with others. She's cocky, opinionated and acts like she doesn't care about anyone or anything else. As long as she gets the prize -- and gets it first, winning by a landslide at least -- she's happy. She's a pretty sore winner about it, too. All in all, she lives up to the name she's made for herself throughout Filgaia, "Calamity Jane". The thing is, that isn't entirely the truth about who she really is.
Jane Maxwell is driven, yes. She also cares more than a bit too much about money, jewels and shinies. she doesn't do it for herself, however, which is very important to note. In reality, Jane is collecting all of these riches in order to pay any expenses to keep her family's orphanage going in the city of Court Seim. The kids there idolize her, so it's no wonder she has such a swelled ego. Still, she knows her responsibility is to take care of these children, and she takes that job seriously. Throughout the game, you see glimpses into her sweeter side, especially when the orphan children are mentioned.
Her father was always a kind, giving man, and part of Jane hates him for that. She resents that all of his kindness got him and his family nowhere. To this day, she believes there is no point in helping people just to help them, that everything has a price and the world is cruel. She does, however, accept that others out there (like Rudy) believe and act like her father does. She doesn't understand it, but she believes and respects it nonetheless. Deep down, she really is a softie, maybe even a romantic. Still, she'd much prefer to act the role of in-your-face and down-your-throat, especially when it gets her the gold.
POWER:
In canon, Jane is already an accomplished shooter. She is one of the few (read: two) people who can use the power of ARMs, which is to say she psychically links herself to the biomechanical structure of her gun in order to heighten its power and abilities. She always carries her ARM, a pistol, with her. She's already known for her crazy accuracy and gunslinging. She's also a thief. With all of that said...
1) Master Thievery - Maybe she isn't so stealthy (given she wears a poofy orange dress), but she's a master pickpocket now. You won't know you're missing anything until she's long gone. Pair this with how long she's been raiding ruins for treasures, and you've got a very talented cat burglar on your hands. (If only she'd get out of that bright orange...)
2) Mystic - In game, Jane can take an item and have it use its full effect on ALL party members or enemies. For example, a heal berry that heals for 300HP would heal 300HP for everyone in the party instead of just herself. To adapt this for C&C, I'd like to give her the ability to multiply items, but ONLY ones she can hold in her hands, and ONLY up to four duplicates. They'll be fully functional. She'll have no idea she can do this upon arrival, of course. She'll have to figure it out for herself.
3) Finest Arts - In the game, there's a 1/5 chance that Jane will use a skill called "Finest Arts" with a normal attack (if you have the right skill). She'll fire all bullets left in her gun at once for massive damage. She'll have this in C&C, but with an added bonus - over time, she can learn to use her own energy to make the bullets, therefore adding to the attack.

[ Audio ]
-- button here does... no? Wait, why's it blinking like that? What--
[ A few moments white noise, then silence. When the communicator has apparently been picked back up and the audio turned back on, there's something like a knocking noise against whatever part receives the sound. ]
Hellooo~? Is this thing on? Can anyone hear me out there? Yes? No? Hmm. I wonder what else this thing can do...
[ Suddenly, video! A young girl with blonde curls tied back with a bright blue ribbon is grinning. ]
Oh, that's much better! I've never seen anything like this before. I bet it would fetch a pretty penny! Not that I'd get rid of this thing, I think I'll keep it for myself!
[ She places the communicator on a table so she can properly have a seat without holding it. She's still smiling for the camera, though. She's enjoying this far too much...]
Come to think of it, I haven't seen anything like any of this before! Where am I? Someone just called it "The City". That can't be the real name, right? What kind of a proper name for a city is that?
Anyway! Thank you in advance, of course, for the information you people are going to give me through this thing! However that works... I really appreciate it, so don't make me wait too long for it!
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
For Jane Maxwell, aka "Calamity Jane" and treasure hunter extraordinaire, climbing the Caging Tower was a cinch. Just a jump there, a roll here, maybe a bullet or two fired at a switch every couple of steps. Oh, right, there was also the occasional trap to look out for, but since when did she fall for a trap? This place was too easy for someone as skilled as her. This job would be over with in no time. The reward was as good as hers.
Jane blew the smoke away from the barrel of her ARM, grinning like a cat that'd just pounced on a canary. Her aim was true -- as always -- and the ladder that was stuck near the top of the ledge she wanted to be on swung down and slammed into place against the wall.
"That 'Night Gaunt' is so gonna get it when we get up there," she said with full confidence as she proceeded to climb.
Her butler, Magdalen was right behind her. "Yes, of course, Jane," he answered dutifully. "We've moved quite fast this time, haven't we?"
Jane's laughter echoed through the metal tower. "Well, of course! This was too easy! I can't believe that sucker's paying as much as he is!" Her grin widened even more. She pulled herself up onto the ledge after ascending the ladder, took a good look around, and then quickly headed down the first corridor she felt like going down. "According to my information, the 'Night Gaunt' must be here... I can already smell the reward money!"
That wasn't what she saw, however. In the center of the room, three young Drifters were caught in what appeared to be a shield of light, supported by four magical pillars. She gave them all an incredulous look.
"Huh, what's this? These careless people are the vicious and savage 'Night Gaunt'?"
Magdalen was saying something, no doubt trying to explain that they couldn't possibly be the monster they were being paid to kill -- which Jane knew already, thanks, she was just a little bit put off at not finding what she wanted. Okay, more than a little bit.
She resisted all urges to scream, stomp her foot, pout, or otherwise show her displeasure. This was such an inconvenience...
