Writing Challenge. “Close your eyes.”
Blaine looked up at Kurt and wiped tears off his cheek. Although he’d chosen this, he’d wanted a child, and he’d wanted to be the one who got to connect with little him or her or hir in that special way, now that it was happening, Blaine was so overwhelmed with hormones and the changes to his body that he could barely stop crying long enough to get anything done.
“Hi,” he said in a voice that attempted brightness but failed miserably.
Kurt knelt by him and petted his hair. “What are you doing on the floor?”
“Weeping.” Blaine rolled his eyes and cupped a hand over his belly. It was funny. He hated being so fat, but stroking his belly, and especially feeling their daughter move, cheered him just a bit. Probably because he was already so in love with her it hurt a little.
Kurt wrapped his arms around Blaine, hugging him and kissing his cheek. “What happened? Did I do something? What can I do?”
“It’s not you. It’s hormones. I’ll adjust,” Blaine said.
“Am I supposed to ignore you when you burst into tears? I want you to be happy.”
Blaine had to admit that being loved on when he was down did help a little, but this had gone on long enough that he was tired of making Kurt feel bad just because he couldn’t get used to the hormones.
Kurt reached down and prodded the side of Blaine’s belly a few times, very gently. Blaine laughed a little as there was a flicker of movement.
“You woke her up!”
“I’m wicked. Close your eyes. I have a surprise for you.”
“You don’t have to keep doing this,” Blaine assured him as he shifted and crossed his legs. Elizabeth seemed to be changing positions now, too, and he rubbed his side to soothe her. “It’ll get better.”
“That’s what they say,” Kurt replied dryly. He dropped a kiss on Blaine’s forehead, then rose, pointing at him with a sassy finger. “Close your eyes, mister!”
“Fine.” Blaine closed his eyes. “Waiting! Is this a sexy game? Are you going to bring out a harness? Will there be handcuffs and a safewo- This isn’t a surprise party, is it? With people listening to me talk about naughty sex?”
“No!” Kurt yelled. His footsteps grew closer and Blaine frowned deeply, wondering what Kurt had done this time to cheer him up.
There was a little yelping noise, and Blaine’s eyes popped open.
“Oh my God! It’s a puppy! You got me a puppy!”
The little golden and white ball of fluff wiggled around in Kurt’s hands, yipping and yelping excitedly.
“Don’t get up!” Kurt laughed and sat next to Blaine, who reached for the little creature and cuddled it to his chest.
“I’ve always wanted a puppy!” He closed his eyes, because he was crying again, but now, he was so, so happy.
“I thought about getting you a hairless. I’m not sure what kind of dog this is, but I got her from the shelter-”
Blaine reached back to lean on his hand. Between the wiggling puppy in his arms and the wiggling baby in his belly, he was a little off balanced. Kurt slid in behind to support him, then rubbed his sides with both hands.
Beaming, Blaine held the puppy up for Kurt to see.
“She’s cute.” Kurt pecked his cheek. “But nowhere near as cute as you are right now.”
“Oh, she’s perfect. Thank you, Kurt.” Blaine rubbed his cheek against the puppy’s fur. “Does she have a name?”
“Nope. She’s pretty new. And tiny...”
“Yeah... You’re so tiny!” Blaine told the puppy.
The puppy yipped as if to respond.
“That’s right!” Blaine said. His face hurt, he was smiling so hard. He let the puppy down so she could run around a bit, and she did, scampering off to sniff things, then back to Blaine for a pet, then off to sniff some more. Blaine settled his hands over Kurt’s, then looked back at him, buzzing with warmth and energy. “I love you.”
“Love you too. It’s good to see you smile like that.” Kurt kissed his lips once, twice. The puppy came back to yip at them, then ran over to the bed and jumped, futilely, trying to get up.
“I was always going to smile again, when she came.”
“Well, I couldn’t wait.”
They kissed again, savoring the taste of one another for another minute before the puppy interrupted again, and Kurt helped Blaine up so they could make preparations for their new babies, the first adopted, and the second on the way.
