Sherlock Holmes movie

I just got back from watching Sherlock Holmes (and then taking a walk) with my father. I liked the movie more than I thought I would, although I was expecting Moriarty to have more a part in the overall machinations.

The one thing I did not like about the movie was the Rachel Dawes Syndrome in full effect with Rachel McAdams, who is best put to use in Mean Girls, playing Irene Adler. (Maggie Gyllenhal was tons better than Katie Holmes and should have been cast in the role right from the start, Mr. Nolan.) (Quite unlike Iron Man, in which employs the formidable Gwyneth Paltrow to play verses RDJ.) I know McAdams popular for movies right now (for whatever reason), but she was so out of place up against Robert Downy Jr. and Jude Law that it was distracting. I hope when the inevitably do a sequel to pull Moriarty out of their pockets, Adler is either recast or disappears off the face of the script.

Another thought:
I was struck early on by the realization that Holmes and Watson bore an incredible resemblance to House and Wilson. So much so that I was making mental comparison between the two genius/genius-wrangler pairs throughout the movie. Especially when they're locked up together and Watson is giving Holmes what for about trying to break him up with his lady friend. No wonder people are saying it was slashy.

The question is, then: Did Hugh Laurie and the writers of House write that dynamic into the script of the show based on Sherlock Holmes (master of details that no one else sees) and Watson, or did the writers of the new movie pick it up from the show? I'd lean toward the former, and a brief Google tells me it was deliberate. But was Watson so like Wilson in the original stories, as put upon in wrangling the genius and trying to keep him from destroying his love life?

All in all, very enjoyable. Would watch again. Hope for a sequel (without McAdams).
