Mixing musik with art

It is complete, I hopefully will not tinker too much more, I believe I am satisfied heh.

Dearest nathan_fhtagn I think you should take a glancy the most under the cut:P
Others I encourage too, I'm very proud of this piece, and it's the first finished real piece for 2007 for me.

YAy me so glad you likey (I actually was slightly mentally holding my breathe as it were that you would not like it or feel it had no semblance, silly artist anxiety I know)
But when I do more personal pieces I tend to get those silly thoughts of miss-representation and the such.

Twas a fun (and at times struggling) challenge, but a good challenge since, A. I have very lil experience illustrating guys, two that violin and the hands were my biggest struggle (me hate hands) and making sure I had proper perspective and proportions.
But I'm pretty happy with the outcome, though as like any day after and re-looking I'm having slight impulses to tweak and fuss over some things. I'll refrain of course:P

As for getting a violin with gear decals, I got the idea from something I saw in a post on anachrotech of a fellow who had done such to his guitar.
I had thought about changing the shape all together and going almost with the designs I saw from that one nifty website you linked with the kick has shaped electric violins. But the few drafts of that proved to be too tricky and messed up the flow of the rest of the piece (not sure how to describe it, other then it wasn’t working) so went with a classic design.
We can always make you some shiny gear and such decals for your violin:P I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult.

Again I'm glad you like and I'll work on getting you your on 20x20 print somehow soon:) It's meant to be much bigger then this, the resize lost a bit of the detail)

I remember you posting about how much of a bitch it was getting the hands right. For what it's worth, one of the things that really stood out to me in this picture was how well you managed the hands. So many artists really choke when it comes to getting the hands of musicians just right. Either they get the proportions wrong or they don't think to look at what the 'proper technique' looks like when a musician is playing. You nailed it. Very nicely done! :)

And do please refrain from changing anything. I love it just the way it is!

As far as funky violin shapes go for the picture, I'm glad you chose to do the violin the way you did. My electric violin hasn't proven to be very photogenic. I mean, it looks cool and all but it doesn't have quite the same coolness of style as that of a regular acoustic violin. Adding the gears was just the icing on the cake.

And I'm no stranger to having things not work in an artistic endeavor. Sadly, it's all too common to start out something that seems cool at first but over time seems to be less and less cool. I can imagine that some of those stranger electric violin bodies could be a total bummer to try to draw/paint. I certainly wouldn't be up to the task!

Do let us know if/when you're going to be in the great Pacific Northwest and we'll see about working out a time for photography!

That anachrotech guitar post has had me drooling for a long time. I have 'plans' for something along those lines - a bit more ambitions than just etching the brass plate. Robert's doing his 'treatment' to my current guitar at the moment but I've also get a wholly custom instrument in the works with my luthier friend. It -will- be glorious. Oh, yes, it will. If we get invited back to Dragoncon this year, I might just have to bring both guitars. :)
