My notes and observations on the Oscars:
- Gaboury Sidibe looked gorgeous last night. I hope she felt the same way.
- Guys, if you’re going to cut to people in the audience during the opening dance number, make sure they’re lit. (I can only assume the shadowy figure we saw was James Cameron, since the camera cut to him just after he was referenced in the song.)
- Is Suzy Amis (AKA Mrs. James Cameron) ill? She looked positively wasted away.
- There seemed to be a trend of wearing ruffled red dresses. Was this related to the Red Dress Campaign?
- Mr. Downey, neither Tony Stark nor Sherlock Holmes would have been caught in that ridiculous tie. (Though I did enjoy the writers-vs.-actors banter between him and Tina Fey.)
- Was it me, or did the real-life Touhys (especially the husband) look a bit annoyed after they showed the Best Picture montage for “The Blind Side”?
- Okay, Ben. We get it. You’re a Na’vi. But the bit is going on too long.
- Ah, the “Kanye Moment”. Elinor Burkett practically hip-checked Roger Ross Williams in her rush for the spotlight. I honestly thought she was a stage crasher. (There are those who feel she was anyway.)
- Why was Farrah Fawcett not in the Memoriam crawl? I know she wasn’t best-known for her big-screen work, but she did appear in several movies (most notably “The Apostle”), and if they counted Michael Jackson’s appearance in “The Wiz” ...
- I enjoyed the ‘script reading’ they did for the Best Screenplay nominees, as well as the explanation of Sound Editing and Mixing.
- I love dancing. I love musical scores. I did not love the “Best Score” nominees dance number.
- If no horror films have been recognized at the Oscars in 35 years, then please to explain the inclusion in the montage of “Silence of the Lambs,” which dominated the awards in 1991? And seriously, was there a “Twilight” clip in there? (Well, the film WAS pretty horrific...)
- I liked that they once again had colleagues of the ten Best Actor/Actress nominees speak about them instead of just showing clips again. (Especially since most of them were showcased in clips throughout the night anyway.)
- Of course Jeff Bridges won. He really tied the film together, man.
- Sandra Bullock’s speech was wonderful and touching, but did she forget to thank her husband? Countdown to “Trouble in their marriage” rumors starts now.
