Why installing things yourself is not always a good idea

I dropped my car off for an oil change this morning. The guy at the service desk was on the phone, describing a needed repair to someone. Here is what happened, and it was too forehead-slapping not to share:

A guy brought in his car, complaining that he could smell gas. The mechanic looked at the car, and discovered the gas tank was leaking. Why was it leaking? Because the guy had bought an "after market" speaker and apparently installed it himself in the back of the car. Unfortunately, the screws he used were so long that they drilled right through the gas tank. Needless to say, the tank needs to be replaced (and the screws filed back). The repair is going to run the guy nearly $1,000.

Shockingly, this will not be covered under warranty.
