katmorning, so you might get fic!spammed. I was so excited to have a Bones voice again, I went ahead and posted this one!
“Here’s what I think. I think you’re scared of him.” Angela is a hedonist. She savors every bite of the cheesecake she ordered for lunch (‘it’s not about nutrition, babe, it’s about calories’ ‘That is patently false’) and washes it down with a sip of wine that lingers in her mouth. “Or maybe not him, but what he represents.”
“I despise psychology. Even in its armchair form.”
“Bullshit.” Coming from anyone else, Brennan might be taken aback, but she likes her new friend’s ease, her self-awareness, and her lack of social norms. In a way, it’s something they have in common, so Brennan just smiles while Angela scoops up more of the confection to contemplate on her fork. “Or maybe you do, but it can be surprisingly helpful.”
“Okay, then. What does Seeley Booth represent that… frightens me?”
“It’s not sex. You’re clearly comfortable with your sexuality.”
Brennan snorts. “Clearly.”
“No. I think Booth scares you because he could change you.”
Brennan fights to look calm. “I don’t understand what you mean.”
“Sure you don’t, honey.” Angela waves a hand, fending off Brennan’s coming defense. “I know, I know. But you know what, honey? There’s a little girl buried somewhere in your soul who’s always imagined that she would find someone like Booth on his best days. A knight in shining armor. A gentleman and an officer.”
Brennan rolls her eyes. “I was never interested in juvenile romantic fantasies.”
“Bullshit, again, sweetie. There’s nothing wrong with admitting to a little weakness, a little softness around the edges.”
“I…” Brennan takes another gulp of her wine. She didn’t come to the lunch intending to become so intoxicated, but that seems to be about the only way she can handle Angela sometimes.
Angela smirks. “And then there’s Booth on his bad days. Mm, now there’s the stuff a woman can appreciate. When he’s about to lose his temper, you know what I mean? And he gets that edge in his eyes? He could arrest me any time.”
“Angela!”
Angela grins. “What? I’m just saying, sweetie - that pony was available. You should have saddled up and rode it for it all it was worth.”
“I think… I avoided a long, unnecessary emotional entanglement which would inevitably lead to heart break.”
“Sweetie, there’s the difference between you and me.” Angela shoves the last bite of cheesecake into her mouth. “God, that is good. I relish long unnecessary emotional entanglements. You really need to learn the value of a good heartbreak.”
Brennan shrugs her shoulders. “Perhaps.”
“Not perhaps. Definitely.” Angela waves at the waiter. “Don’t worry, eventually you’ll come around to my point of view on this one.” She turns to the gentleman patiently awaiting her.
“Are you wanting your check, ma’am?”
“God, no.” Angela swallows what remains of her wine. “We’d like the rest of this bottle of wine -“
“This is lunch, Angela…”
“-and another piece of cheesecake.”
Brennan can only roll her eyes to hide the secret delight swirling in her belly. Drinking wine on lunch, skimming, but not completely skipping out on her responsibilities… Some voice inside her which, idiotically, sounds like Booth, whispers: Lighten up there, Bones. It’s called fun.
She shoves the voice back and gestures for the waiter to be a little more free with the wine.
