1. Who's your patron saint and why did you choose her? Do you pray for her intercession regularly or not so much?
Officially, my patron saint is St. Rose Phillipine Duscene. And I chose her because I got confirmed at 13 and sort of picked her at random.
Unofficially, it is St. Therese, the little Flower. Mostly because of this story.
She was driving down a road, which was bumpy and hard to traverse, with a novice nun next to her in the wagon. The axle of the wagon broke, sending both nuns flying.
Saint Therese got up, dusted herself off, and addressed the heavens. "Lord, if this is how you treat your friends, it's a wonder you don't have more enemies!"
...She reminds me to handle the bad in my life with grace and humor. Also, she vowed at the end of her life to spend her time in heaven doing good on Earth.
Do I pray for her intercession regularly? Sometimes. Most often, though, I tend to entreat St. Jude (patron saint of hopeless causes), St. Anthony (patron saint of lost items), and Mary.
2. Have you decided on a project that you'd like to see published? How far along (if at all) are you on that process?
I very much would like to self-publish a book of short stories (but I have to wait until I get the last rejection letter from a publisher I sent the lead story off to). But as far as publishing a novel, yes. I am going to try to get Leaven of Malice published. I actually need to finish writing the book and then, you know. Get down to business. I've decided that's the big difference between myself and most published authors. Published authors finish their books.
3. Talk to me about Bones, what is it about Brennan, Booth, and their relationship that catches your attention? How do you feel about how the characters are developing?
Well, initially, I very much like the idea of them swapping traditional gender roles. Booth is the one placed in the position of understanding emotions and how people relate to each other (traditionally a female domain). And from then on, I like the inherent tenderness in their relationship. It's hard to see in the S1 sniping, but I think they recognized something in each other that had been hurt and very much didn't want to damage the other. I like how they slowly approached each other, and that they were first best friends before now (apparently) lovers. Also -- I like them being adults, you know? too often, I think, in stories, relationships are far too based on the high-school dynamics of "he-said she-said" or giggling in corridors. These struck me as mature people grappling with real issues of a real relationship. I like stories about teenagers, don't get me wrong. But I also love stories about adults.
How do I feel about how the characters are developing? I think Hart tried to overextend some things and shortened us on some others (I don't know how much you've seen of the current season finale so I'm trying to be vague here) but over all I'd say it's about damn time, the direction they're taking them now.
4. Do you still learn new things about yourself that you weren't expecting? Is it still very shocking or do you consider you have a better grip on your identity now than when you were just starting out on your own?
I personally have discovered that... I am always learning new things about myself. That's one of the good things about being human, I think -- as individuals we are constantly in evolution. What appeals to me now would not have appealed to me as a 19-year-old, in some cases, and yet in others I remain resolute. I'm always changing, and always surprising myself. For instance, at 19, I was so ready to be married and have babies. And now -- my gosh. The thought of that gives me hives.
Yeah, I've got a better grip on who I actually am, but you know -- I don't think I'm ready to say that I've fully realized everything I could be.
The great thing about being on your own is that you do get to discover how you really tick, and how you really cope with stress and how you really handle money. You might not always feel like you're ready for everything life throws your way, but... yeah, you learn a lot about yourself.
5. I know that as a faithful and intelligent woman you question your faith regularly, is there anything that has you thinking in that regard right now? Do your personal morals and those set by the Church clash often?
Not actually all that often do they clash. I have an opinion about homosexuality which is different than the Church's. And I'm not sure that all marriages need to be about having babies. But I'm confident that we'll come out on the right side of those issues. It might take us a while (I mean, my God... It took us until the '60s to go "yeah, maybe reading the Bible in your own language might be a good idea".), but we'll get there eventually. We always do. But as far as, am I pro-life? Yes. Do I consider that (holy) matrimony should be between two consenting adults? Yes. Do I believe that there's one God who created the universe, that he sent his only Son to die? Yes. Do I believe in the communion of saints and the apostolic Catholic Church? Yes, absolutely. Do I believe that the Pope (when speaking from the seat of Peter) is infallible? Yes.
As far as what I'm contemplating right now -- I am just spending a lot of time on the life of Mary and what it means to be a woman in the church. Maybe I'll post some more thoughts on that later.

1. I know you are job hunting at the moment. What would be the perfect job for you, if it were to open up?
The perfect job? Eventually I'd like to direct a childcare center. I'm really passionate about early childhood... and I'd like to have it actually be a viable career choice (in terms of actually being able to afford to live)
2. Your best friend and your brother are getting married. (Neat!) Did you introduce her to him, or did he introduce her to you?
Strictly speaking, I introduced him to her. But it should be noted that Maria was my best friend from the fifth grade on... so they knew each other for quite a while before they started macking on each other in our senior year.
3. Would you like to move to another city someday? Another country? (Not necessarily permanently, but for upwards of a year.)
Yeah -- I'd love to live in another country. Actually, if my sister's career goals go through it is very likely that if I'm still unmarried I'll go with her. After all, I can teach and write anywhere. And I'd love the experience.
4. I've noticed that you often post or reply late at night. Are you a night person by nature, or is this just how things have been working out?
I'm a night owl. My natural rhythm seems to be waking up in the afternoon and going to bed in the morning. I have to fight that tendency quite a bit.
5. This is probably a cheat, but: name five authors that have influenced you as a writer.
Easy-peasy! JK Rowling, J.D. Robb, A.A. Milne, Anais Nin, e.e. cummings... yeah, there we go!
