Transitions
Caroline Forbes considers herself to be the kind of girl who can roll with the punches.
When she was nine years old, she didn't get a pony for her birthday. She got a crown. Which was nice enough, one supposes, if she hadn't already saved the money for the bridle and the other tack.
She straightened her shoulders, adjusted her goals and spent the money winning the class election. President Caroline Forbes was better than Jockey Caroline Forbes.
It was better. It was.
At twelve, when other girls were worried about junior high and getting breasts (junior high was a total breeze; and her breasts were totally cute and perky and there, right on schedule), her mother and father told her they were getting a divorce. Because her dad liked other men better than he liked her mom, and that was just fine.
She sailed over that obstacle. It was her mom's fault anyway.
It was.
And now - at the ripe old age of seventeen, she is a vampire.
It's a transition. An obstacle. Something she'll get figured out, because she always figures it out. She can handle drinking blood (might take some getting used to but -- doable), with special jewelry she can go outside, she can be totally, completely normal.
And no one will ever know.
Just like they didn't know about the pony.
Or that sometimes she wishes that for one goddamn minute she could have a normal family.
Everyone will say: Oh, that Caroline Forbes. Nothing ever gets her down.
Because nothing ever does.
Not in the day time, anyway.
