I want to rediscover my love for Harry Potter -- I haven't really thought about the books in a while, but I miss the people in fandom a lot. It was my first grown-up fandom. The first fandom in which I completed a novel (at the age of 15), the fandom I grew up in. The fandom that introduced me to the women of Gryffindor Tower -- the majority of which I still look up to as examples of how to conduct myself publicly, how to write excellent fic, and how to be a woman, all-around. HP introduced me to people like the very lovely
aggiebell90, who give the word "Christian" a good name.
tosca1390 is the same age as I am, and her introduction to fandom made me sit up and take notice; become less complacent, push myself. The best kind of competition.
r_becca continues to exert a positive and subtle influence on me, as well. I could name all of my HP flisters, but you get the idea.
So. Thirty days of HP love, rage and nostalgia. Here we go.
Day 1: Discuss how you got into Harry Potter:
I was probably, uh... 12? My mother picked up The Sorcerer's Stone at the book fair and my father read it first, thinking it was hilarious and quirky, we all followed suit. At 13, I found fandom, but was much more comfortable (then) writing for the much more juvenile fandom of DBZ and Sailor Moon. Some time later, I found Gryffindor Tower, and... as it often happens, the community spurred me to write HP fic because I said to myself: this is something that I want to be a part of. This is something I could care about. Next thing I knew, I was working very hard on what was basically a rip-off of the classics at the time, but the ladies there were lovely and supportive and understanding. They pushed me forward.
Book after book, I fell more in love with the characters, their humanity, their mistakes and their flaws. As Harry aged, so did I. As he grew disillusioned with Dumbledore, so did I. Reading them now, I'm less angry. I can see, from THIS side of my teenaged years, how disappointing the fact that Dumbledore could be wrong was. As an adult, I love that. I love the folly that's presented in the books of... setting yourself up as infallible. That's the fall of Dumbledore, that he can't allow anyone to see his weakness, the truth of him.
Now what I love about the books are the themes, the things about it that are real and true and universal and epic. In the end, it's not really about the magic for me. It's about everything else in the books.
There you go. That's how I got into HP. Sort of.
