The Thrill of The Chase--Sherlock/Cocaine Fanmix

Feb 28, 2011 20:50

Last week or so I read a book where Moriarty was never evil and was a completely innocent man--Sherlock only thought so because of how deeply he'd descended into cocaine addiction. Watson took him to Vienna to be treated by Freud and Holmes became cocaine-free and depressive and left with his violin to find himself again (the author's explanation for Holmes's "death" at Reichenbach Falls). The book was okay, but it really got me thinking about the kind of man Holmes was. If he'd been the narrator instead of Watson, I would have had to consider him an even more unreliable narrator due to his sheer insanity.

This spin-off novel was no great stretch of the imagination, I was startled to realize. Holmes is anything but stable, despite his genius. All through the stories Doyle wrote, Holmes was practically anorexic, rarely slept (and did so at odd hours), and took cocaine (a "seven-per-cent solution") when bored (read: between cases). At the end of The Sign of Four, Scotland Yard has their criminal, Watson has a wife, and Holmes goes home to Baker St. and the story ends with him reaching for his cocaine solution. And I've been wondering what kind of thoughts the cocaine inspired him to or helped him avoid. So of course I've made a mix that reminds me of Holmes and his loneliness/drug addiction/general feelings on the vices and immorality he deals with/boredom/etc. To me, Holmes had two great "thrill of the chases": the first, of course, the actual physical chase where he was in top form, using his mental faculties to great purpose; and the second, the thrill of the cocaine chase.

The mix is mostly mid-tempo with some violin and French songs, as Holmes played violin (apparently very well) when he was in thought and also spoke fluent French. Just keeping it appropriate.
