What are you doing there???

I have been receiving a few emails from people who found my profile in the Orkut and also my friends from the LJ and all of them ask: WHAT THE HELL DO YOU DO DURING THE DAY??? HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME??? WHAT ARE YOU DOING THERE IN ITALY???

So here it goes:

I am here in Italy to get my Italian citizenship. Full stop. Why? Because it will open doors for me professionally in Europe. Because I won't have to bother about visas anymore and go through the same boring process of going through interviews with bloody immigration officers. And also because it will reduce dramatically the cost of education for me...(the price of a post grad course for me in the UK is nearly 150% more expensive comparing to the fees for "home" or EU students)

So I've decided to come here, because if I was to do this in Brazil, I would have to wait a minimum of 5 years to get it!!!! There are nearly 50.000 applying for Italian citizenship only in the city of Sao Paulo!!! I've left everything in London: job, friends, house, boyfriend.

I live in Mantova, a little city of 30.000 inhabitants where life is not in the fast lane. The commerce sleeps from 12.30 to 15.30 and by 7pm, the city is dead. There are a few options to go out, and I have discovered things like the library (which is open at lunch time, unbelievable) and have met a few people.

I got involved with an ONG who supports newly arrived immigrants by giving them information about the city, culture and gives information about citizenship, work and also promotes events to integrate the society. I do very small volunteer work, also because I dont want to get too involved as I would like to leave as soon as possible. In return, they will let me use the ISDN line of the association to plug my laptop and use the Internet.

Ah, I am still working for the paper, as a sort of Editorial Consultant.

I have seen a few cities so far: Milan, Verona, Belluno, Venice. I am trying to convince the people who live with me to come to Venice for the Carnival. It should be good fun! So, the only thing is to keep my mind occupied to escape from the boredom I am a modern cosmopolitan girlie!!!!
