Subject: Hyde/Jackie
Title: It's Never Over
Tracks: 14 (all MP3 format; runtime: 43 minutes)
Notes: My first fanmix, hopefully not my last. There aren't any spoilers really, unless you've never seen the show and then I would recommend you go watch it and not read any of what I have to say! You can find it almost anywhere! This is essentially a compilation of songs that study the evolution of the relationship of Steven Hyde and Jackie Burkhart of That 70's show. Covers were made by me.
001. Money by Pink Floyd
"Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today."
This is Hyde's opinion of Jackie at the very beginning of Season One and it doesn't change for quite a while. Jackie is fairly young, vain, and popular at this time and dating one of Hyde's friends based on his looks. She is obsessed with social status and doesn't hesitate to point out Steven's obvious lack of one.
002. Plastic Fantastic Lover by Jefferson Airplane
"Her rattlin' cough never shuts off
Is nothin' but a used machine
Her aluminum finish, slightly diminished
Is the best I ever have seen."
After a confrontation between them about Steven's treatment of Michael Kelso there is an imperceptible change in behavior. It seems that Hyde is almost impressed she had the gall to say anything to him at all and although he still finds her fairly annoying he is beginning to tolerate her much better than he did before. However, this did not stop him from keeping Kelso's indiscretions secret, forever maintaining that she is annoying and loud.
003. It Ain't Me by Johnny & June Cash
"Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'll only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who'll promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes to you
Someone to close his heart
Someone to die for you and more."
After Jackie finally breaks up with Kelso she seeks comfort from a very odd person indeed: Steven Hyde. While the kid is baffled as to why this is happening he seems to play along for a while with the usual protests that they have nothing in common. Finally after she attempts to suck his face off in the car after buying him some awesome new boots he comforts her when she starts to cry, all the while reiterating that someday she'll find someone deserving of her and that they are only friends.
004. If I Fell by The Beatles
"So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
Cos I couldn't stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain."
Hyde takes the fall for Jackie after she buys some pot to try and prove how bad ass she is (it was hilarious) Jackie decides that she will now devote her time and effort into trying to make Steven Hyde hers. He has resisted successfully thus far until the Formans have a Veteran's Day party and Jackie brings a handsome date as a ploy to inspire jealousy. The guy seems nice enough until he tells Hyde what he really thinks of her. Much to Steven's surprise he knocks the guy on his ass, Jackie makes a big deal and Kitty Forman convinces him to go on a date with her. They kiss and you can definitely tell he felt something but Jackie, moment-ruiner that she is, said that she did not.
005. I Can't Quit You, Baby by Led Zeppelin
"You built my hopes so high
Baby then you let me down so low
You built my hopes so high then ya let me down so low
Don'tcha realize sweet baby?
Woman I don't know...which way to go."
This song has a certain sexual charge to it and is coincidentally the name of the Season Five episode where it is revealed that over the summer Jackie and Hyde have formed some kind of unusual relationship. I say unusual because it appears they speak very little and make out quite a lot and when confronted by Eric and Donna they say they can stop the relationship for the sake of Kelso's feelings although it is clear by their actions they have no desire to do so. It seems that Jackie got her wish after all! :)
006. Fire by Jimi Hendrix
"Alright!
Now dig this baby!
You don't care for me,
I don't care about that.
You got a new fool,
Hah, I like him like that.
I have only one burning desire,
Let me stand next to your fire."
As we move along in their relationship it is beginning to become quite clear that obviously Hyde cares for Jackie a great deal, a fact that surprises the rest of their group and drives Kelso to become quite jealous and possessive. A small contest of sorts begins for her affections but all the while it is apparent that Jackie favors Hyde and even proclaimed she loved him after a small hiccup in their relationship nearly caused a break up. He never said it back to her but she said she didn't care whether or not he did so. He doesn't care about her money and doesn't require lavish gifts and in fact spurns them--he begins to teach Jackie that possessions are not all that is important in life. Albeit the lesson sinks in very, very, very slowly it is clear they enjoy each other's presence and he is protective of her as witnessed in Season Five when the Formans find out Jackie's been sleeping in Hyde's bed with him because her mother kinda disappeared.
007. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 by Bob Dylan
"They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table
They'll stone ya when you are young and able
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck
They'll stone ya and then they'll say "good luck"
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned."
I do realize this song is NOT and I repeat NOT about smoking pot but about being persecuted, all right? But whenever Jackie and Donna get included into the infamous 'circle' I always think about this song. I don't know why. Another, more valid reason as to why I chose this song was that as a couple they faced some pretty heavy judgement from their friends and it surprised me that Jackie didn't give up right away. Personal appearances were very important to her in the beginning and dating a rebellious paranoid 'burn out' would definitely be seen as a downgrade. Eric goes so far as to call their relationship 'unholy' but do they care? Hell no!
008. I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye
"I know that a man ain't supposed to cry,
But these tears I can't hold inside.
Losin' you would end my life you see,
Cause you mean that much to me.
You could have told me yourself
That you love someone else.
Instead...
People say believe half of what you see,
Son, and none of what you hear.
I can't help bein' confused
If it's true please tell me dear?
Do you plan to let me go
For the other guy you loved before?
Don't you know..."
It would appear that Hyde is not as unflappable as he makes himself out to be as he later forbids Jackie to hang out with Kelso alone to give him some peace of mind. Jackie agrees to it but after Fez confesses to having a wet dream about Kelso as a naughty nurse the forlorn airhead seeks solace in a fellow airheadian and Hyde has the misfortune of peeking into the room. What does he see? Kelso leaning his head on Jackie's shoulder and Jackie stroking his hair. Nothing happened between them but tell that to Mr. Jealous Rage. He later goes out and cheats on Jackie in an asinine attempt to 'get even.'
009. These Boots Were Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra
"These boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do
one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you.
You keep playin' where you shouldn't be playin
and you keep thinkin' that you´ll never get burnt.
Ha! I just found me a brand new box of matches yeah
and what he know you ain't HAD time to learn.
Are you ready boots? Start walkin'!"
Hyde finds out he was in the wrong and confesses to Jackie about his transgressions and she promptly breaks up with him, hurt and confused as to why the men in her life keep cheating on her. For a second there it looks like Hyde is about to shed a tear or two but alas, no dice. You know he feels like a pile of crap and Jackie won't let him forget it either as she starts to put a plan in motion that makes both Kelso and Hyde sit up and take notice. When it seems like she's about to make a choice she chooses herself over the both of them and skips away, which made me smile.
010. Acid Queen by The Who
"If your child ain't all he should be now
This girl will put him right.
I'll show him what he could be now
Just give me one night.
I'm the Gypsy - the acid Queen.
Pay before we start.
I'm the Gypsy - The acid queen.
I'll tear your soul apart."
This song is also the name of an episode but I believe it has a great insight into the relationship of Jackie and Hyde after they reunite. Jackie is pushing Hyde to be better, to want things for himself, to desire more and to not be content with mediocrity. Hyde is perceptive and he knows what she's doing as she's pushing him but he figures out rather quickly he's not meant for a desk job and even then Jackie is still with him, supporting most of his decisions.
011. Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer by Stevie Wonder
"I never dreamed you'd leave in summer
I thought you would go then come back home
I thought the cold would leave by summer
But my quiet nights will be spent alone."
Later on in Season 7 Jackie begins to have doubts as to whether or not she and Steven have a future together. She decides to break up with him to prove a point; to force him to make a decision. Later on an opportunity arises to go to Chicago and she is torn whether or not to leave and when she does she doesn't really say good-bye to Hyde. I think chose this song because Hyde didn't really seem to think she would go through with it and when he found out she left he went after her.
012. Desperado by The Eagles
"Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it's too late."
Hyde goes to Chicago, finds out where Jackie is staying and it looks like he might even have a real answer for her but of course, Kelso walks in wearing nothing but a towel and assumptions are made and battle lines are drawn. Instead of a listening to her like he probably should have he storms out and appears that Jackie and Hyde are over. Even after it is explained to Steven Jackie and Hyde are pretty much unable to reconcile and Hyde disappears to Vegas.
013. Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin
"Five long years I thought you were my man
But I found out I'm just a link in your chain
You got me where you want me
I ain't nothing but your fool
You treated me mean oh you treated me cruel
Chain, chain, chain, chain of fools."
Y'all need to bow down and show some respect to Miss Aretha or she will blow out your ear drums with her awesome voice! So Steven goes to Vegas and when he comes back a stripper shows up pretty much seconds later and spills the beans on how they're married. Jackie pretty much shit her pants at that point and you could tell it really, really, really hurt her and I think it was worse when he didn't immediately get rid of her. Sure, Hyde and Sam didn't stay together but some serious damage was done and it seemed like they might never get back together.
014. Wild Horses by The Rolling Stones
"Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands
Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away
I watched you suffer a dull aching pain."
Season 8 was a flipping disaster. You know it, I know it, an elephant would know it too if they got TV out on the savanna. Jackie and Hyde shippers everywhere were outraged that they never got together but you know what? Screw the writers! For those of you that appreciate a happy ending this song, while very sad, gives that opening for a reconciliation in the future. AND BECAUSE I'M WRITING A FANFIC ABOUT IT BUT I DON'T HAVE A CHAPTER DONE YET!
